It's from ehow. They pulled that one down after an outcry:

http://blog.human-friendly.com/ehow-advise-to-use-base64-to-encrypt-credit-card-data

It's the same source for pic related.

There is some hilarious PHP documentation sitting near the top of Google searches for common questions.

It's not the language's fault this exists, but fuck me, a lot of people read this sort of thing.

Honestly if you're not interested in "learning Wordpress" there are better options for you. Deploy your app to Heroku, or build your own EC2 server. Better yet, run a static site generator on Github pages.

We don't pretend to be "better" than those options. The cPanel environment is legacy, shitty, and still sells incredibly well because most "web developers" are graphic designers "that also do Internet".

There's a reason we literally don't offer a version of PHP that's not End Of Life. Most of our customers are following howto guides like pic related.

It was 100% real. I took it from ehow.com after someone else made pic related and I went looking around the site. It's been pulled now though.

The development geniuses at ehow wrote an article called "securely storing credit card data" or something like that, and wrote an entire bullshit article full of SQL injection issues that culminated in this step.

Only base64 isn't encryption. It's usually painfully obvious when you're looking at base64 encoded data, and you can just call base64_decode in almost any language to reverse it, making it not a useful security process at all.

Pic related, it's the other great ehow article that hasn't been pulled down.
