Is RAM more expensive nowadays?

I thought by now a pair of 8gb sticks would cost less or at least comparable to what pairs of 4gb ddr3 sticks cost 5-6 years ago. Maybe it's cause I'm looking at gaymer ram but the "value select" ram isn't much cheaper. It's such a bummer when a ryzen board and CPU upgrade looks so attractive. The ram costs 3/4 what the processor is worth for fucks sake.

My very first PC build besides an old one I made from scraps was with the FX-8350.

Fucking hell. This processor did me well for a few years but was it ever a meme. 8 cores that probably never saw full use even now that multi threading is becoming more common. Many times I've felt the woes of this thing's abysmal IPC. Back then I didn't even know what that was. I just thought clock rate was all that mattered.

I want to upgrade to Ryzen but AMDs piledriver failure is making me feel uneasy.

From what I'm reading the 1600/1600x is good value in contrast to the i5 lineup. I'd feel like shit if I pulled the trigger and Intel actually made a ~30% IPC jump with coffee to leave AMD in the dust again. I know for sure they're planning on adding 2 more cores to their i5s.

Booting from SSD (rest of OS etc on HDD); which parttions need to be wear to minimize use & wear of SSD?

>tl;dr: which partitions are required to boot up to the point where linux can read the rest of the system on another raided array.

I'm about to install an OS on a the first UEFI machine I've ever built. I've had trouble installing onto the RAID 0 pair of 3tb hdds using the AMD SB Hostraid controller, and the workarounds are a bit kludgey, so I decided to fall for the meme and bought an SSD to put the /boot on...

>

...and what else?

>inb4 nypts

I know, and apologize, but I would appreciate this little bit of advice which eludes my web searches.

>should I just put the entire /root onto the ssd (minus /var, /tmp &c to put onto the hdd)?

I want the minimum required to boot up to RAID usability to be on the SSD in order to minimize wear.
