Since it was the main tracker used in old days and it lost most of it's magnet links (I guess) you can say it has been compromised.
I might be wrong tho. These days I use 1337 and rarbg for everything.

For me, it wasn't a big issue so I let the issue be there when I tried Debian first time.

They may be needed if you want to use bleeding edge hardwares or some shit wireless cards like Broadcom. When you just want to bring your old laptop the second life with GNU/Linux, then Debian would be one of the best options around there.
