I was born and raised here since the early 1980s.

IMO, 1990s NYC was the pinnacle. It was absolutely top tier. The perfect balance of safety, affordability, culture, and activities (things to do). It was an absolute god tier experience that anyone could enjoy, no matter how much money they had in their pockets, and made better by the fact that mobile phone ownership and Internet usage wasn't widespread yet.

Now? It's only worth living here if you have a lot of money as it's been essentially turned into a playground for the rich. It's worth coming here for schooling or if you're just starting some career in a field this place is known for. But once you get your education and/or work experience under your belt, it's better to move to a cheaper part of the country where you can take your salary with you, save money, and actually become a homeowner, and raise a family.
