i dont think anything raf has done will ever be as iconic or awe-inspiring as ss02. no doubt VC was quite the spectacle as well given its setting + the looks but ss02 was, and still is, a fashion tour de force.

the use of the head wraps, the white/red monochrome fits in unison with the flares was like nothing menswear had seen. lauding ss02 is a cliche at this point, but i dont think that makes praise/reverence any less valid.

idk if you've seen the video for ss02 but it is mandatory for understanding the impact it had.

hes never abandoned his tailoring or suiting, aw03, ss04, aw05, aw06 + the modern era all feature suiting and tailoring.

vc certainly has the darker, sinister subtext that he often explored, especially in the use of the military hats+anoraks(pic related) the obvious reference being to the german Wehrmacht uniforms. however i think ss02 does a much better job of realising his reverence for the more minacious societal undercurrents that fascinated him. obviously they're two different conceptualizations of this exportation(man vs nature/rebellion, protest, alienation)

its interesting that you used the phrase 'embodiment of rafs aesthetic' in description of VC because i feel that much more aptly describes closer.

VC has little to no suitwear and almost entirely baggy/lose fitting outerwear which is representative of a key component of the raf aesthetic, but it by no means encapsulates it fully.

raf simons first became known to due his slim fitting suit wear and tailoring, high cut armholes, slim shouldered jackets and slim pants. obviously his work also incorporated a lot of baggier designs and silhouettes, but i dont think those are his defining designs.

closer represents a microcosmic realisation of all rafs best aspects.

it has the impeccable suit wear + modern slim tailoring, often combined in the same looks with loose imposing outerwear and pants.

closer combines the silhouettes and patterns with his culture concept injection that he was known for and i think closer is a much better exemplification of everything raf simons. it runs the complete gauntlet from tailoring to streetwear and does it perfectly.

not only that but the pieces themselves in closer are of impeccable quality.

i think its a bit one dimensional to be his magnum opus, conceptually its very strong but the clothes themselves are very inconsistent, which is not unusual for raf simons but compared to aw03, ss04, ss01 its fall behind.

closer is the the perfect synthesis of rafs conceptual brilliance and actual craftsmanship.
