for phone selfies, overexpose (make them brighter if you can) and always, ALWAYS bring down the brightness (best thing to do in instagram is bring down the "shados" slider to minus 10-15. this helps get rid of the shitty phone look in low light areas on phone pics.

also on IG play with the temperature slider (warm/cool) to get a more natural look. never crank it too hard, but often phones will misjudge lighting conditions and give you super blue/super orange photos. the goal here generally would be to get the white things in your photo looking actually white.

for framing up your photo, google the "rule of thirds" and don't treat it like a rule, more like a guide.

when you're thinking of lighting, try to get "Soft" lighting. "soft" light comes from large sources and gives a sort of gradient falloff rather than sharp edges. it looks beautiful. this is why you see fashion kids leaning over wide white neon signs in shop windows and shit, its because these are big wide light sources that will give soft, beautiful light. or think of the sun vs. an overcast day. the sun is bright, but most of the light comes from a single point in the sky, so shadows are harsh. when the sky is fully cloudy, light is more spread out and comes from all across the sky. shadows are hard to identify and everything has a wash of even lighting. see pic for difference.
