And this is one of the jewels of an HMT I bought off of eBay. Seriously, it was that bad. I actually got the movement running, but only barely. Keeps time to about a minute a day.

Well I didn't get interviewed, but I am in the background a few times, I can tell you that much.

Quality is going to be different on all of them, but I'll post this as a fair warning. This is what a properly oiled jewel from a Longines I was working on looks like. No debris in it, no oil on the flats, just a nice clean jewel.

If you're buying off of eBay, there's a good chance it won't be in good running condition. Pretty much everything I've bought was improved by a good service.

Someone else was asking about buying a movement and fitting it to a case and just how feasible that is. I'd recommend against it unless you know for sure that the movement will fit the case. If the distance from where the dial rests against the front of the case back to where the stem goes in to the movement isn't just right, the hole in the case for the stem and the spot where it goes in to the movement won't line up and there'll be no way to get the movement to sit properly. If you want some sort of project watch, buy an Asian 2824 clone. Dials, hands and cases are plentiful for 2824s. Pic related is a watch that I cobbled together, although it required a bit more work as it uses an A. Schild 1913 movement with all the other parts being for a 2824.

I love plain watches, I wear my old Tudor Oysterdate almost every day. The Mark II is just a bit too much for me it seems.

In other news, I'm in the background of a video. Does that make me internet famous yet? http://ifixit.org/blog/7168/watchmaker/

Someone last thread asked how much I paid for my old Speedmaster, pic related. $1600, but I'm hoping to move it and pick up an old vintage Explorer. I might even do a trade+cash deal for the Explorer, which would be the easiest.

Its a Mark II. As far as I know it uses copper plating.

Its only slightly more accurate than your average mechanical. The real advantage is that you never have to worry about winding your watch, it just always runs (until the battery dies).

Electromechanical. Uses a battery to power electromagnets which force a balance wheel to oscillate.

That'd be pretty damn easy, especially if the crystal is just acrylic and not mineral or sapphire or something. Like everyone else said, I wouldn't polish the case. The chance of messing up the original factory style finish is just too high for something like that.

From the users perspective, the only thing you'll notice is that the power reserve is shit, only like 15 hours. The movement was in extremely bad condition when I got it, and there's only so much I can do without sinking a ton of money in to it. That being said, the automatic mechanism works great and will keep the watch plenty wound throughout the day if you just wind it in the morning. The only other problems are just little things that don't actually affect the running of the watch, like how I had to swap out the 4th wheel so now its color doesn't match the other wheels.

Might as well post this one more time for the weekend crowd. Selling this guy. Keeps time fine but has a few running issues, I can explain if anyone asks. Asking $150, but I'll be entertaining offers if no one wants it by the end of the weekend.

Fuck it, here goes nothing. Assuming I've got this guy regulated correctly, and I believe I do, I'm finally putting this up for sale. Its running far from perfect from a watchmakers perspective, but I've fought with this for way too long and I know when there's just no more progress to be made without dumping a lot of money in to it. It should be keeping time very well (again, checking it over today and tomorrow), and the only thing that the average person would notice is that the power reserve is shit, only like 15 hours. However, I wore it for about a week and only wound it when I woke up and when I went back to bed and the automatic mechanism kept it well wound the rest of the time. There's a bit of rust on the minute and second hand, but its hard to see unless you look up close and with good light. The hour hand and crystal are brand new and both in great condition. The case has a good sized dig in it at the top right, but the rest of it is in pretty good condition and has patina to match the dial, which looks great with the blued steel hands. The leather strap is basically brand new, but I did accidentally order a long version so it won't fit skelly wrists. The watch itself is pretty small by modern standards, about 33mm across not including the crown, but I stopped noticing how small it was after a few days. I can post more pictures and answer questions if anyone has any. I'm asking $150 including shipping, which isn't much more than I bought it for, just because of how "poorly" the movement is running, even though its keeping time very well (should be at least, will confirm tomorrow). And dammit, we're almost at bump limit, so I'll just post this again next thread.
