Uh I don't really talk to that many malays, I live in a part heavily populated by Chinese Malaysias, and I go to a private school so it's mostly upper class Malaysians I.E Chinese and some indians.
idk when I'm at a hawker stall or whatever I can speak some basic bahasa (it's pretty simple stuff, numerical terms or the same drink I always get, limau ice) but most peeps speak english well enough. fucking hopeless at hokkein though.
Indonesia is way worse, it's hard as fuck to get around if you're foreign cause most people speak next to no english, only bahasa.

Goretex is a pretty good choice for a more lightweight and breathable hard-shell, I don't know why you'd dislike it
If you want a soft-shell, I can't really recommend anything in that category
It really depends on how much rain you'll be taking on (like if you're just using it to go from the bus stop or train stop to your place of work, soft-shell might be the better choice; if you're cycling around in the rain for hours or if you're hiking in really wet conditions, a hardshell will offer the best protection)
