its just a matter of time, no one starts with confident lines, how long have you been drawing?

my drawing really improved the summer before this one, i was drawing a few hours each day, thats when i notice bigger improvements

are you studying art now? or just learning on your own

starting by going to a second hand shop and buying a cheap shirt, cheap jacket, and cheap pair of pants, buying a seam ripper and taking them apart at the seams.

then buy "a guide to fashion sewing" on amazon and a random pants pattern from the fabric store, and cut a pair and sew them in some random cotton or something.

if you do those things youll learn lots. sew a few shirts, a few pants, and a jacket (just buy the patterns) and then pick up a patternmaking book and have some fun :)

its sort of a game that i like to play, i like to see how few lines i can use it a sketch sometimes. now i kind of minimize my sketches subconsciously, it makes them easier to read for people when im showing my design, but i dont think its the only way to sketch haha i like your style, it has a good kind of exploring feeling like youre not scared of the paper.

>>7360660

i would just do the fabric treatment before cutting it with a pattern. after you have all the bumps, then cut the fabric with your pattern dude

i would get really good at doing this because it looks like you use it in lots of designs/

i would buy a biker jacket with elbow patches done in this way and deconstruct it to see how it works so oyu learn

>>7360678

depends on how fast you want to learn, the fastest way is to learn through classes. you can learn on your own, it just takes magnitudes longer to acquire the information

first, dont worry about mimicing styles at all, you would have to do it for thousands of hours, and its extremely important to learn a variety of techniques and approaches.

second, i personally dont like working from books very much, i find that its kind of shit if you want to be able to draw from your head easily (which is how i like to design)

i find that a great way to get better is to put objects on a table and practice making accurate perspective and understanding how shading and light functions in relation to perspective.

i think the absolute best training is drawing from life in a combination of fast poses and longer ones. but if you dont have access to a model, draw your friends or people in public or your dog.

its just a skill, the more you do it the better you get. i never drew at all until 18 months ago when i wanted to learn to design. i dont think im anywhere near proficient but the only way to improve is just do it often and with discipline

the best way for you to keep the bumps raised is to use a stretchy material as the under layer and use a less stretchy top layer. You will need to sew lines of top stitching through both layers while the under layer is stretched. When you let go of the stretched material underneath, it will force the top layer to create a "bump" with the excess material being pulled inwards by the elastic underlayer.

cotton batting/foams/neoprene/soft felts, but given that its a knit i would hestitate to use something very heavy, or just make it fairly oversized. i think i would try a layer of high stretch lycra underneath a cotton jersey

id do the external layer in a mid weight neoprene so it stays stiff enough, i think it would be able to get the raised collar effect and sleeves that hold their shape.

the type of texture i think you were trying to draw on the shirt underneath is done on motorcycle pants/jackets, its generally a custom machine that sews any material (generally leather or denim) to a stretched piece of elastic underneath in exact distances creating a repeating sort of rib effect, it allows for heavy materials to have extreme mobility

if you just want to achieve the look, you just use a lightweight cotton batting (see pic on the inside of some jersey, and sew repeating lines over it.

none of that stuff is super complicated in terms of pattern, its just that all of the little patches and little lines on everything might be a bit time consuming to do very neatly

haha just chill at starbucks, buy a shitty green tea and do gestures for hours. i used to do that on weekends, its so fun, sometimes id get an audience but its great practice

i used to hate how i sketched but more and more it feels good, its gotten automatic, now its fun

for sketching, for me, i think the key was to learn to love it, you start to improve from there. I still think my sketches are kind of shit, but at least i can communicate something

yeah the construction on aitors new stuff is particularly incredible, which is really nice to see after looking at the finishing on his earlier skull bags. I cant wait to see in person.

do not take sapos class. thornton is a bit better, but still. drebskaya is fucking awesome in everything, and kim teaches a really good sketching class as well, so that will be nice. im excited for you, that shit is so fun, im kind of a nerd i loved grading

im glad you like it man, i had such a good time at that school, really try to make sure youre in mrs kims class for patternmaking, she is amazing, her pattern 1 class is more like a mixture of flat pattern/draping techniques which is a really cool approach.

and yeah, i want to go see aitors stuff in london when i have time.

yep its kind of a challenge to find good versatile denim thats fun to wear, but i think its nice to have just one pair of minimal slim black jeans.

rag finders of america, fidm store, there is a decent place on the northeast corner of 9th and maple, idk the name. zip up for hardware (expensive but its worth it because most hardware places suck)
