Hey anon, I would say you should go to a barber, and ask them and let them cut you. That is step 1.
They're generally good at cutting your hair, so that it doesn't look dumb when it grows longer.
As it grows, try styling your hair all the ways you can according to the current length.
And from there only time will tell, this is a long process. BUT! You get to know your hair better, how to style it, the limits etc.
