>> No.9977641

Yes. Like >>9977632 says, great beater shoes, and absolutely phenomenal basic weight lifting shoes. They are cheap (and will fall apart fairly quickly), but the classic style is always gonna be serviceable.

I have a pair of retro white ones I use for lifting that basically have gone to shit but still are my favorite lifting shoe ever.

I can't help but think of the band that popularized them, at least among me and my loser junior high friends: All American Rejects (you're fucking lying if you have the nerve to say that I'm even slightly incorrect)

Best sneaker there is. I've got a pair of red Jacks that are a few years old that I've beat to shit and a pair of off-white Chucks which are a couple months old. Works great with just about any casual fit. One thing is they do smell, especially if you wear them without socks, so make sure you spray em every once in a while to get rid of the odor.

depending what you consider 'quickly'
i will put money on that i have abused my chucks more than you, and they are still going strong two years later.
i guess it depends what you mean by going strong. they are all fucked up, the canvas is ripped and stained, the rubber is coming off, ive had to replace the laces. theyve been caught on fire. seriously chucks are amazing. perfect shoe for fucking around. and cheap as hell so it doesnt matter if you fuck them up. and you will fuck them up.

>>9977658
m8, your slightly incorrect.
i mean, i cant speak for you and your high school friends, but i barely even know the name of that band, dont listen to the music, and dont know what they look like.
chucks are worn by so many people and in so many movies its hard to give credit to any one person besides Chuck Taylor himself.
in the end, they are a cheap, inoffensive shoe. as long as they continue being manufactured, people will wear them.

They are okay. Definitely not a good look for everybody. for one thing, any color scheme besides:
>mono white (true white OR off white)
>mono black
>black and white
>gray
>navy

is cringey garbage. for another, at least in my experience, comfort will vary. my first pair of chucks were size 10 lows, and they were not that comfy. I sized up to 10 1/2 hi tops before realizing the discomfort was due to the way the shoe was made and how my feet fit in them. Then I bought a pair of size 10 hi tops and they are some of the comfiest shoes ever. I don't know what's up with that.
in addition to this, if you have big feet or have reached a certain age, they will look silly on you.

i dont know if i could get a pair to last ten years. just because i fuck them up so much. im always to lazy to put on boots or change my shoes etc.
so my chucks are my hiking boots, my climbing shoes, my running shoes, my daily wear, my beaters, my beach shoes, my boat shoes. my chucks are what i wear when i go to class. my chucks are what i wear when i go to the shop. my chucks are what i wear when im hanging out. thats the only reason my chucks get absolutely destroyed.
i was thinking for my next pair, to patch the toe crease as soon as i get them. just get some kind of fabric patch or duct tape, im not sure, ive never patched anything, then slather it in shoe goo probably, could be any kind of strong ass adhesive really, then just put it inside the shoe where the rubber toe cap attaches. one on the left and one on the right. do you think thats a good idea? its always the first place that starts to fail on my chucks. i just copped a pair of vinyl sided ones on sale and i think they will look really bad in the condition of the canvas ones.

>> No.9978847

>>9978157
I'd actually agree with you here - that is, that I'm wrong, at least broadly. The broke-ass chucks aesthetic is nice, and I do see the point in saying that they hold up well.

It's just in my experience, my toe busted out the side and fuckin' wrecked em within 6 months. This was, notedly, when used for heavy ass weight lifting, so it's far from exemplary.

>> No.9978866

>>9978847

well they werent intended for weightlifting, and ive never weightlifted in chucks.
but for hiking in the woods, walking on asphalt, climbing trees, climbing rocks, sandy surfaces, wading in water, wading through mud, catching on fire etc
more typical wear and tear, they will last roughly 2 years as beaters with maybe 4 days a week as everyday shoes.
ive had two die in roughly two years, i believe one was close to two and one was closer to 2.5
i have one pair now at 1.5 and it probably wont last the summer unless i stop using them for running and buy some actual trainers.

By the way I listened to you and wore flat sneakers for compound lifts, slipped while squatting and really hurt my right hamstring. Thank god I had the guards up because I could've gotten hurt a lot worse. Maybe my gym is more slippery than yours but I don't think I'll wear flat shoes again. It really ruined my workout that day and made it hard to walk for like half of the week.

Major apologies. Are you rolling on your toes through the squat or something? The ideal weight lifting squat doesn't really involve the feet moving at all, other than shifting the center of gravity towards the heels.

The heels on the shoes I wore had no grip on the soles so as soon as I put weight into them I slipped. The floor at my gym is remarkably slippery under squat racks and we only have mats for deadlifts and oly platforms. Flat shoes are probably better for deadlifting but I'll stick with what I have for the next little while. I'm used to/comfortable with a platform so I'll probably get a pair of weightlifting shoes when I get back from Germany

>> No.9978975

>>9978970
Ah, that really sucks, I'm sorry. That does sound very unsafe, though - doesn't need to be like textured underneath the rack, but it sure as shit shouldn't be slippery. Sorry for contributing to that.

There are so many different styles and colours it's difficult to answer with any certainty whether or not they're worth buying.
I bought my first since I was a teenager about a month ago. I'm 25.
I bought mono black low-tops with black laces, and I usually wear them with skinny jeans or tapered joggers and they look consistently good.
I'm not crazy about the coloured variants, and the ones with the gaudy star look awful.
I think they're pretty versatile though, in general, and if you don't buy some of the stupid fucking versions out there I'm sure you'll find something that fits you.
