Hey /fa/, I'm in uni and have gotten fed up with my obnoxious high sierra shit backpack. Based on my lurking of /r/malefashionadvice, I should probably get pic-related.

I'd like to request some backpack advice, basically. What should I get if all of the following apply to me:
> I carry around a 750ml water bottle
> I live in Canada
> It rains relatively often where I live
> I'd prefer to spend under $100USD
> I carry around a laptop that is 1.5cm (0.6") thick
> I don't carry (m)any textbooks, as I am a comp-sci student
> I need easily accessible exterior pockets that can hold pencil case and other misc. items
> I'd like something that lasts me for at least the next 3 years, preferably longer
> I hate velcro

Thanks in advance, sorry if this is too specific, I don't even know if such a thing exists.
We can turn this into backpack general if others need backpack help

I have that exact backpack in reverse denim with black leather straps, it's a pretty large backpack and it feels super sturdy - I really doubt it will break in the next few years before I lose it or stop needing a backpack.

I was going to cop Fjallraven 21 on massdrop but it just seems so overplayed for that price point. It doesn't have a good amount of room, either. You are basically paying for brand name and for that durability. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but I'd rather have something practical with decent space even if it's not top notch quality. Most backpacks will be fine if you don't go full retard and wrecklessly throw your bag all over the place.

Satchels are infinitely better because you can access the goods you are carrying while wearing it on your body still.

No. It's more about the screen size than about the thickness. If you do manage to get it in, it would be difficult to open/close each time.

>> No.9964693

After less than a month of ownership, a rivet failed. I had only used the rucksack a few times, and one of the straps that the main closure straps feed through came loose. It appears that the rivet was originally put in place at an angle, making it a weak connection. I understand that things like this could happen in production, and I would have simply knocked a single star off if Fjallraven fixed the situation.

First, I sent a message explaining the situation to Fjallraven using the contact form on their website. No Response. 2 weeks later I sent an email to the address listed on their contact page. It has been 10 days since I sent this email and there has still been no response.

I'm now stuck with an expensive bag that I'm going to have to get fixed myself, which will result in ugly evidence of repair since the rivets are marked with the Fjallraven name, and a new one won't be.

A complete waste of my money.

Well just know I have the original brown and black herschel backpack and i've been using it almost everyday to carry shit and the only thing that has broke from it is the laptop holder inside. Even after like 6-7 years of everyday use it has held up. I've always wanted to buy another backpack but i haven't seen any point

I don't care whether or not they're overplayed/played out; I take bigger issue with the idea of buying a bag that offers next to no protection for your belongings inside and is just a big fabric box with no facings and some straps.

Never understood the appeal other than the cute fox.

What would be a good pack for a daily NYC bus commute? I'd really like something that can carry a water bottle, a textbook + a notebook or two, laptop, calculator, lunch container, with extra room for other personal goods, and pockets that would give me easy access to my wallet/metro card/phone.

Does such a thing exist?

Look into some of Dakine's higher end stuff, even The North Face is good for what you're looking for. Maybe consider some of Jansport's less obvious options, like the Hatchet? Just spitballing here.

I got a non-branded black military backpack with molle webbing on it for $50 shipped. Is polyurethane coated inside for water resistance. It took a while to find one that was 15-20L max, most of them were huge or really small. Happy so far for the price.

Rains bag, pretty good, looks nice, only annoying thing is that the black material can attract smuges of oil and stuff so make sure your hands are clean after you do your daily skin care or whatever before touching the bag. Also got that Herschel heritage brown and blue bag that everyone has, but I'm going to patch the logo over and add a few other patches. Since everyone here owns one.

Quality is not good. Was falling apart after 6 months. The leather is really bad quality and sheds. Wasn't worth retail (which I paid, stupidly).

Really? I've had mine for a year or so and it's still in great shape. I think the lifetime warranty definitely makes me feel better about the possibility of it turning shitty

Aside from the leather disintegrating, don't you find the actual materials used for the outer and the inner construction to be really cheap? I don't know maybe I had high expectations since my last backpack was Prada, but this felt like what you'd expect from a $50 Hershel, not a $200 "premium" backpack.

>> No.9966277

>>9966256
Yeah I admit that it doesn't feel like a $200 backpack... I had been looking at the $245 Plesanton, but if it's the same material I'm happy I went with Lhasa.
It feels like they used the same material they would on the $30 basics they sell at Wal-Mart, aside from the leather and brass, which are very durable and functional but not what I'd want at this price.
But the space (pockets without looking too pockety) and look of it are big draws for me personally.
