alternating dark colors (e.g. black jeans/hats/shoes, etc) with light (pale) colors,

how does one do this correctly?

light neutrals (beige/tan/cream/greys/etc) and one primary color; blue/navy being the easiest. try to work with 3 colors the most to be on the safe side

this isn't a rule so you it's not the case 70% of the time but a light top/slightly less light bottom balances easier than a light bottom/slightly less light top

honestly just start observing color palettes everywhere: stores, buildings, trees, subways and you'll eventually get a sense of what colors to pair each with
