I know that here if you want to teach private school you just need a masters, and if you want to teach public school you can have a bachelors in anything and you need a certification. So when you're older you could get certified and work towards retirement as a teacher, since it's a bit more chill and you can do it at an older age.

Not doing medicine but know quite a few friends who are in UNSW. They say the content is relatively interesting (anatomy, virology?? Something about diseases I dunno) but they're also shit tonnes of bogus subjects like professional medical practices where you get lectures on being ethical and shit. The thing most of them enjoy is placements - tbh I hardly see them anymore cos they're always at hospital/clinics during the week, observing what doctors do and such.

i love doing it qualitatively, describing and learning about concepts using words, that is something i _can_ do, and i do it well
i started doing my degree at the start of last year. i basically had no other ideas about what to, and i still dont. i feel as though i should move into earthscience/geology because that seems less math-y and im doing an earthsci course and am both enjoying it and doing reasonably well in it

I recently saw a former, fellow philosophy major. It was 2am and we were both at some 24hr taco place. I was there alone, having just finished drinking with new, mostly male friends, and he showed up with three "blondes", having just left some fraternity party; he's in a fraternity. It's funny to watch how he's become more and more "fratty" over the years. That's amplified by the fact that we're from an over-enrolled, West Coast, public school. He's graduating this quarter and going to law school in the Fall. I was somewhat happy for him but I won't lie: I felt a twinge of jealousy. He reminds me of many like him whom I've met before: ambitious, vibrant, so full of life. I used to like people like that, but then I found out that many of them are manipulative and driven only by the material. But maybe I'm assuming too much. Meanwhile, I'll be staying another year here. Still very much alone.

I often wonder how the other half lives. I don't know what happened to my self-esteem, my confidence in what I was doing.

Hi everyone so I'm doing computer science and I was counting my credits the other day and I have like 4 free classes I can take before going over the credit limit. I want to take physics courses and my 4th class can be quantum physics if I do the prerequisites right but I also want to go to grad school for CS and I'm worried the physics courses would be irrelevant and would hurt my chances of getting into a good one.

Yeah, it's a job that's always going to be around. I don't know what it's like where you live but jobs are tight as fuck for law but if you get a good GPA and extra curricular stuff on your resume you might get snatched up for a clerkship that gets your foot in the door for a job.
Alternatively a lot of people do law and commerce or something and get a job in business since they love people with law degree there then try to become a legal practitioner through other means.

My gf is doing computational linguistic and my adviser also started with comp linguistics. You study acquisition of knowledge in children and you model language learning to create better language recognition and machine learning algorithms.
Try to ease your way into compsci through the linguistics path. Don't even touch anthropology. Philosophy is useful if it deals with symbol logic and formal languages.

I'm "self-educated" because I never know what I want and i'm more interested in art anyway, which is pointless to get a degree for in 2015 AD.

My minimum wage job sucks ass and it makes me want to die. Sometimes I wish I had gone to college just so I could at least have a social life. I live in a bumfuck town full of brodudes. As for people with niche interests in art/music like me, only a fraction of them are likeable.

That being said, I've done shows with some of my favorite musicians, i've performed for crowds of people, and I haven't redirected my life based on the phony pursuit of something I'm not interested in, which makes me less pathetic than the majority of you. But I envy the money and social experiences many of you will make, and most of you will take for granted.

yes, there is. the purpose of universities is to create *academics*, i.e. people with a great depth of theoretical knowledge and the ability to influence methodology, etc. there's absolutely no reason to waste 4+ years going to university to get a well paying job. in most places of the world (yes the developed world too) you learn a trade or become a technician in some industry and that's more than enough.

that's not the case in the USA for some reason. seems like the bubble of overqualification will have to burst sooner or later
