My favorite sneaker has to be either the NB1300 or the Vans Sk8 Hi. The Sk8 Hi is iconic enough to inspire homages such as the Raf Velcro. And with Vans Vault, you can get them in high construction and higher quality materials.

AF1s came out in 82 and were a complete flop. It wasn't until they re-released in the early-mid 90s that they gained their status.

Adidas and to a lesser extent British Knights were the genesis of sneaker hype/culture. Throughout the 1980s Adidas was much more popular than Nike. Superstars, Pro Models, Concords(not Jordans), Forums, Gazelles and Micropacers were some of the first shoes that people viewed as more than just shoes. These shoes came in all sorts of interesting color schemes and used a variety of different materials compares to the standard nylon mesh, leather or canvas found on most models.

Nike started gaining ground in the late 80s/early 90s when Michael Jordan started getting noticed outside Chicago and the Weiden Kennedy ad agency hired some new blood to create some very captivating ads for Nike. Even then, it wasn't until 2001 that "sneaker culture" exploded to a level never seen before. In March 2001 the Cool Grey Air-Jordan XI released and sold out instantly the morning they were released. There were riots over these because the supply couldn't meet demand and re-seller culture was born. Things just went deeper from there with Nikes artist series and their SB Dunks.

The notion that shoes like the AF1 and AJ1 were instant hits is a fallacy. Both shoes sold very mediocrely upon their inception and it wasn't until the AJIV/V that Nike really started to turn things around in terms of consumer perception. Even the AJIII was seen as little more than a pair of knockoff British Knights outside of Chicago.

Honestly the straps are the best quality. The OG style AJ1s dont have rolled leather edges and this leads to them fraying and looking like shit really fast. The rolled edges, while not original, make the shoe much more durable and add a nice touch of quality.

Heat-welding or "hyperfuse" as Nike now calls it allows them to make their shoes 100% out of very cheap man made synthetic materials while upping the price for perceived "sneaker technology". It's little more than a gimmick.

Nike hasn't been doing anything remotely ground breaking since Alpha Project went defunct. They are master marketers but the quality of their products has taken a nosedive since Phil Knight stepped down in 2005. He was the the fuel to the fire who really cared about hiring innovative designers and making sure his companys products were truly a step ahead of the pack. The way things are now the company is thriving due to their reputation but hasn't put out anything game changing in over 10 years.

From casual shoes like the Air-Sock and Presto to their ownership of Cole Haan to the visible Air pocket to the way they marketed their signature athletes. I will say Nike is the most influential company, but that's all in the past. They aren't doing anything new because frank they don't have to at this point. That's not to say they won't have to sometime again but only time will tell.

Also keep in mind Nike advertising. Particularly in the 90s. Nike ads were all catered towards CHILDREN. From the commercials with Bugs Bunny and Marvin Martian, to commercials with Godzilla, to Lil Penny the cartoony puppet. They spent a whole decade working children and those ad's worked. Nike brand recognition and positive association is completely ingrained in the heads of all people growing up in that era that the company has successfully gained a consumer base that will last the lifetime of that generation. Nike doesn't advertise nearly as much as they used to because they simply don't have to. They hooked a generation on Nike for life and that generation hooked the younger generation by making the shoes cool.

I hope to see the return of Alpha Project style innovation one day, but don't bank on it happening and time soon.

I do believe that Adidas cares more about artistry than Nike at this point, but I wouldn't call what they're doing (technologically) innovative. Adidas has had some game changing technological innovations in the sneaker industry themselves but no the the extent of Nike in the past. Adidas is responsible for incorporating midfoot shanks into athletic shoes (torsion), an idea borrowed from dress shoes. Then Nike saw what Adidas was doing and put their own spin on it making the shanks out of lightweight carbon fiber instead of plastic or metal/leather in the case of dress shoes.

Kanye didn't simply leave. He got booted. He wanted more control and Nike didn't like the direction of his designs so they let him go. Adidas was willing to give him much more control over his shoes so he rolled with them.

Adidas does do more work with high prifile fashion designers though. Theres no question about that. This leads back to the first point. Adidas cares alot about artistry at the moment. They are taking major design risks and it's paying off. Their Y3, Rick, Raf and even Scott lines are selling great and creating tons of exposure for the company they wouldn't have otherwise. These collabs by Adidas have allowed the company to be taken seriously in the fashion industry in a way Nike simply is not. To put in in vehicular terms Nike and Adidas are like a Challenger Hellcat and a BMW M3/M4. Neither are Rolls Royce level (Gucci, Prada, LV) but both are desirable. Their top tier price ranges are similar and while the Dodge may be more popular and outsell the M3/M4, but it will never be viewed in the same prestigious light.
