I think peacoats look bad. The coat is almost universally too short for the width of the lapels, and it makes for a boxy and "stumpy" look. Peacoats try to sit on the fence between longer, formal coats and shorter, casual coats. A long coat has enough room, visually, for large, chunky buttons and big lapels. A short coat doesn't. On top of that, most peacoats are double-breasted and not only are most people not tall enough to pull that off, the coats aren't even long enough for it.

I'll second all of those other choices though. It's not hard to find something that goes well with dark jeans.

I personally think my black leather bomber looks fucking great with my dark jeans. They also look great with light blue jeans, so it fits both ends of the spectrum.
