Definitely don't aim to collaborate with highly visible bridge and ready-to-wear designers and definitely do not have lots of celebrities ask you for custom work. That would be the total downfall of your business.

I feel like you shouldn't come to a male-dominated board to ask this. You say you want mens' opinions, but they're not the ones buying. I mean, sure, some times men buy lingerie for their S.O.'s, but probably not the ones here, since the demographic here is pretty young and many of them have a misogynistic streak that suggests difficulty holding down a relationship.

I'd really suggest asking /cgl/, since there are plenty of fashion conscious young women there. a lot of them are giant weeaboos, but you look like you are too, so maybe you'd enjoy designing for their ilk anyway.

men aren't going to give you particularly good responses to this question because one of the primary factors in whether or not a woman is going to buy your product is "how will this look on my body?" if it's not something that's going to flatter a non-model body type, she's not going to buy it. men are just thinking, "ah, yeah, that looks hot (on that model)!". But be honest; will >>9353258 or >>9353205

who ever said commercial success equated to taste? in my book, ZB is tacky as hell and has run its course. also, if OP did take that course, it isn't just traditional lingerie, it's leather work, which is an entirely different field of study that requires another shitton of expensive equipment and experience and dicking around.

>> No.9353566

>>9353544
Generally women who buy high-fashion lingerie are conscious enough of how their bodies look to keep themselves looking good in the lingerie. A big problem is that the higher end stuff no longer accommodates British sizing (which ranges from 28-40 A-K) and most women wear the wrong size. Brands like Chantelle and Bordello have sexy lines that fit breasts WAY better than AP and LP do but don't have the same naughty spoiled mistress prestige.

>> No.9353587

>>9353519
It isn't even functional though, how the fuck is OP going to start a business out of designing unwearable lingerie? That shit only works once you've built a name and following. Great advice retard, go ahead and defend everything that celebrities deem cool, even when the circumstances are completely different. Fuck I hate this board.

>Generally women who buy high-fashion lingerie are conscious enough of how their bodies look to keep themselves looking good in the lingerie.
This is just..... hilariously wrong. I can't imagine where you picked up such an egregiously baseless opinion. Perhaps you read that in the GQ your mom bought you a subscription of for your seventeenth birthday?

So, often women buy lingerie to appeal to men they plan to fuck. But even more often they buy lingerie for themselves. It makes a woman *feel* sexy, and since it's very private, it serves as an excellent gesture of self-love, of kindness towards ones body. And who needs that psychological pick-me-up more than fat women?

Plenty of fat women buy themselves beautiful lingerie as a means of feeling good about themselves and their body. (And of course there are still thin/average women with larger breasts that would simply not receive proper support from a flimsy unpadded bra.)

The plus size market is extremely underserved and thus extremely lucrative. (I'm not sure why so few people are taking advantage of this market, it probably has something to do with the mentality of most fashion students; certainly very few of us are fat, so maybe we forget about fat people existing and having money to give to us.) Conversely, the market for beautiful but unsupportive lingerie, which you can buy practically anywhere, is extremely oversaturated.

Women with huge breasts or fat/unusual proportions have an extremely hard time finding bras that fit properly, and thus are far more willing to pay exorbitant wads of cash than an average-weight/thin woman with a-c cup tits.

I thought momentarily about writing an argument about how /cgl/, being an alternative fashion board, is host to a great many women who like fashion and are hardly more incompetent than the denizens of this set, but then I remembered how remarkably little you have to contribute to any conversation at all here

>> No.9354490

No, I actually looked through that board.
My first impression is that it's a cosplay board primarily, so most of the discussion revolves around certain costumes, dresses, props etc.
And there are also some threads dedicated to Japanese-culture inspired fashion, but I would not necessarily call that the most fashion-forward, as they are just toned down costumes in a way. I'm curious what you have to say, because from what I gather, cgl is not really a "fashion" board in the typical sense of the word.

Okay, I'll humor you. It's a board full of girls whose interests lie in:

>costume design
>garment construction and tailoring
>coordinating garments
>makeup
>hairstyling

Essentially, more involved forms of participating in fashion. These women are extremely sensitive to how their (costumed-or-not) person is being perceived by others, and are very passionate about coordinating an outfit or cultivating an aesthetic. Sure, a lot of them have crappy taste, but I would guarantee that their collective understanding of clothes and body-adornment-aesthetics is more profound than this board's. Which is by no means a particularly impressive vector against which to measure anything, but, you get the idea. (One needs only look at /fa/'s WAYWT thread to know that "fashion forward" would be a laughable adjective to apply to this group.)

If that's not enough, I could also posit that since they spend so much time thinking about the shit I listed, they're going to take an interest in their casual dress. Just because they're not following high fashion doesn't mean they're not an important consumer demographic— in fact, it probably means they're a /more/ important consumer demographic because they're going to blow their money on the high street, which pulls exponentially more revenue than designer RTW. A lot of you just buy your shit on Grailed or Yoox, bringing little or no revenue to any brand which means that your tastes don't even fucking matter within the fashion industry because no one is going to bother analyzing your consumer behavior. I say this because I just wanted to remind you that your opinions about fashion are no more important than theirs.

In conclusion, I am going to point out again that they, being women, are far more likely to purchase lingerie than you are. There's no reason OP should be soliciting your opinion instead of theirs. I do however, imagine that they would piss themselves laughing at her sloppy stitching and bubbling fabric panels.

>> No.9354829

>>9354809
>I would guarantee that their collective understanding of clothes and body-adornment-aesthetics is more profound than this board's.

This almost goes without saying. By virtue of being interested (if not adept) in garment production, the average member of that board will have a much better understanding of clothing, aesthetics, etc.

>your opinions about fashion are no more important than theirs.

I think it's important to reiterate that unless you're in the industry, your opinion about the industry counts for exactly dick.

>> No.9354850

>>9354809
Fair enough. I would agree that they're more serious about the technical side of fashion like sewing and makeup etc, even if it's not the same fashion /fa/ is interested in.

Are designer brands actually common on /cgl/ though? Most of what I saw was Japanese or from Taobao because it's hard to get certain things without making them yourself/getting someon else to do it. Then again I haven't spent any time browsing that board at all so forgive me if I'm wrong.

>> No.9354852

>> No.9354907

>>9354850
No, designer is not favored among /cgl/, excepting perhaps Vivienne Westwood and a few Japanese labels like MILK. Again though, I don't feel like that's particularly relevant to the discussion.

For what it's worth, I really honestly believe that there are very, very few active posters on /fa/ who could hold an intelligent discussion about designer clothes, recognize quality garment construction, possess the understanding of fashion history necessary to put designs they see on the runway into context, take interest in the economics of the fashion industry (and how it subsequently affects the products being produced), or actually regularly read publications like Business of Fashion or any important critical fashion journalism. So I don't feel like this demographic has any claim to expertise in that realm either.

All I see on this board is like... boys directing pointless vitriol at one another, maybe some very cursory discussions about tame Asian street fashion and jeans offered by aesthetically-innocuous psuedo-'designer' brands like APC and Acne (protip: don't buy jeans from either of these brands.)
