I keep noticing ethnic minority manlets that dress extremely preppy in an almost ironic way, as in going the whole nine yards with a bowtie and waxed hair.

I think you're conflating race with culture - the colour of someone's skin has no bearing on whether they're prep or not, it's more about their cultural heritage (upper middle class north-east US or upper middle class UK) which few ethnic minorities are born into

I'm not trying to say that prep is some kind of traditional ethnic garment in the way that a kilt is, but just as well the same ridiculousness of an ethnic minority in a kilt is captured when you see an ethnic minority in deliberately preppy clothing.

I'm talking about the intentionality of aesthetics and how it affects one's general style. You're right that a lower class white could ape the style in the same way an ethnic could, but at least with the white they can somewhat hide it (see: Metropolitan by Whit Stillman for a character just like this) whereas with the ethnic it will always come off as inauthentic.

So even though the intentionality is the same with the lower class white and the upper class ethnic, the aesthetic perception still favors the former and not the latter.

One thing that is common within my community (SEAsian) is that people tend to focus on brands and individual pieces more than the entire outfit. You may have seen swagfags with the $500 snapbacks and the $800 sneakers with an equally expensive outfit from Supreme. The look is expensive, for sure, but it doesn't look good. The same goes for the prep style, there are people who will just focus on getting the most expensive brogues they can afford--and then they will call it good. They might spend the rest of their cash on Brooks Brothers or something, and then throw in a bowtie for good measure.

The point is that most ethnic minorities aren't from affluent backgrounds, and so they'll try to emulate the styles of the rich. In doing so, they focus on the price and prestige of individual items and ignore the outfit as a whole.
