Google "cafe racer." From what I understand (been looking into this myself recently), you can get a decent, not too powerful starter bike for ~3000. Suzuki TU250X was recommended to me as having a similar style while being cheap to buy and fix/maintain.

Fun little ride, nice intro to motorcycles. As complicated as a lawn mower to fix. Always get the middle aged dudes telling me how much fun they had with their trails.

Why is every single post here a café racer or retro café bobber..
I really don't know why you guys have this hipster fascination with café racers.
I can respect a nice one but really they're more of a trend thing, and trend things usually attract emulators.

Not saying I wouldn't ride one of these myself, that old cb400 from mid 60s is nice.

can anyone post a bike they actually ride on the road, like really?

I sold my vstar, moving onto an old vmax or a CBR

you forget how you look when you actually buy a bike for the first time, I think anyone here who owns a bike can agree.

1960's cb400 is far from reliable

electrical gremlins all over the place

a lot of people take pictures of themselves on bikes without wearing their regular full out gear.
I guess it's sort of sad, that they're altering their safety for some photos, but any real rider acknowledges priority of dressing appropriately, especially when they hit the highway.

Sometimes a rider will also take into account the fact that they're not actually going to go on the highway, and dress lightly.

I'll wear denim, boots, and a T-shirt, if I'm just rolling around the city under 40 mph, death and trauma to bones at those speeds happen, leather only prevents roadrash which doesn't really happen at 40 mph. well it does but it's a booboo.
Real injuries are of the neck, hands, back, ankles, etc.

No.
All bikes can look good, as long as they''re not too loud in their coloring.

The only ones that are kinda annoying are the harleys because of how loud they are. Also those weird vaccum cleaner ones that have two wheels in the front. Thought they'd at least make one with two in the back first.

Might get a bike next year or sometime in the future, shit is fun.

>> No.9210242

Yeah, but I'd need to get a new cylinder and piston, which would cost more than what I paid for the scooter. The mileage is already about 5l/100km, can't afford for it to be more. I mostly ride it on bike lanes, which makes it a bit of an overkill to have more than 50cc, especially when cops give you so much shit for it.

What's a good starter bike /fa/? I really like some of the old-school rickety looking ones in this thread but I don't really want a deathtrap ("then don't buy a bike").

I'm not desperate for speed I just need something reliable that gets me round the city--I just moved to a new country and don't want to invest in a car. I'm just looking for something aesthetic, affordable, easy to maintain, and reliable.

My dad had a CX500 custom he bought new in the 80's, he sold it to a buddy when he got married. 18 years later, once I got a bike, he contacted the guy wanting to buy it back. The guy had chopped it into a bobber, and couldn't get the engine started so he sprayed a fuck-ton of starting fluid in the carbs and the whole bike was set on fire. Now it's in a junkyard somewhere. This is what it looked like brand new.

They're not very rare (or good) bikes, but they're starting to chop them into cafe racers too; hes been looking for a mint one for over 2 years now.

Cafe Racers are a part of British Rocker culture in the 60s.
They were made for illegal streetracing, because there were no racebikes on the market.
I think they're awesome, but I believe building a modern cafe racer without being interested in Rocker culture is pretty much like a fourteen-year old tumblr girl wearing a Nirvana shirt who can't name a single song of them.

had nothing to do with british street racing

cafe racers were indoor american made bikes that had a low power to weight ratio to race on dirt tracks in the early 30's and 40's in america.

bobbers are what you're thinking of

more specifically norton, a low end british bike company that went belly up

basically it was what the teens could afford (think scion or honda today) because they couldn't afford a car ($$$$ back in the day)

in various states of disrepair so they ended up leaving as much shit off of it as possible to make it easier to access parts

ducati is famous for using a steel trellis mainframe from the early 916 bikes up until the 998 generation just before the current 999 and 1098 frames you see today.

due to the inherent modular build of the bike (like the honda civic i had being the same as the integra) you could bolt and swap parts from an of the 916 family meaning a 748R was very similar to a streetatble 998 or the matrix edition 998

so all i had to do was purchase a pre-owned titanium subframe (2 bolts similar to the motor mounting bolts) the particular brand i had used was NCR tiantanium i got for a steal on ducati.ms back when it was bigger from a dude that parted his old track bike out because of willow springs changing their policy (thats what he said anyways) and him buying a then new 1098s

the rear seat section is only slightly ifferent, you can fit the biposto tail section on the mono frame but the storage and helmet lock don't function

i opted for purchasing a pre-owned OEM moon rear section, and a sharkskinz taillight delete rear section on ebay for cheap

try that with a monoque jap crap cast alum frame disposable bike

idk what it is wit old cb series bikes but the carbs and elec system are trash on that bike

once you park an old CB for a year good luck trying to start it again

you're in it for at least new throttle cables, carbs need to be cleaned, that fuel petcock fucking snaps away, and 9/10 new generator

i literally took my old cb750 and rolled it into a metal recycling center, and sold it for scrap...

I'm pretty sure you're mixing the two up.
Cafe racers were used as streetrace bikes in the UK. Record racing was common, where you'd put on a record and race from the cafe and back before the record ran out.

Norton was one of the first manufacturers to make the featherbed frame which was ideal for racing, but the rest of the bike was shit. So people would put a Triumph engine in, replace the drum brakes with italian disc, and then all the other adjustments that make it a cafe racer.

Reading that guy's other posts, I would strongly suggest anyone who thinks about taking any advice from him to thoroughly check whatever he's saying. That post about old CBs doesn't really make a lot of sense to me.

record racing was a myth that people bs'd about

although a british segment of high chool kids dancing to rock and roll and holding races is surely a romantic notion for cinema it's mostly fable

cafe racing/dirt tracking was largely unregulated pro-am racing with old shitty bikes with knobby tires

much like dirt track races held by the destruction derby rings today

whoever told you that old hondas make good bikes is a liar...just so you know

post means parked a honda for 2 years, it needed more shit than it was worth new tires, new alterator-generator/rebuild, yank and clean bowls of carbs, new throttle cables, new tires.

everything is also tied to the airbox of the 90's cb i had, which made it a pain to do anything

all in all the bike was worth $1500 running

it needed $600 in tires and $500 in labor alone

but it scrapped for $100. easy decision

dead at 25k

honda is known for making disposable motorcycles, most of the cbr series bikes are only decent for around 2 years until you need to pump more money into them than makes sense

Having to replace the tyres has nothing to do with the motorcycle and pretty much the same applies for throttle cables. Cleaning carbs takes maybe an hour and is something you should do once in a while anyway. As for the alterator, I agree, but that's not just Honda.

But anyway, all those things you've listed are easily replacable. Hell most of them should be replaced if it's an old motorcycle. It's the engine, gearbox, suspension etc. that I would be worried about.

it's mostly honda, and honda has backwards ass clean air bullshit on everything they sell.

>engine transmission suspension

honda suspension (showa) notriously shit, ducati used their forks for their lower end bikes (which was honda's higher end CB series bikes) and it is referred to as a shit stain on duc's history

>transmission

honda-matic nuff said

>engine
the one saving grace honda has

but it's still a clunky shitty 4 cylinder

honda should stick to making cheap cars and lawnmowers

even their generators (gas powered for home use not home) suck fuck

it's not a good bike, thats why everyone is so willing to take a torch to one and chop them up to thrash

but are unwilling to fuck up a BSA or triumph basket case (because a triumph headlight is worth more than a running CB)

No retard. Why do you think they're called "cafe racers"? Because fucking Brit rockers raced from cafe to cafe trying to go at least ton up
