These threads are always interesting because there isn't a lot of knowledge on actual mechanical watches. At least practically.

Everyone talking about high end watches obviously haven't owned one for long enough to know the costs in servicing them.

Tourbillions are no exception. To service one you need a watchmaker who knows their shit, there isn't actually that many around and if it's a swiss made one it often has to be sent back and takes fucking weeks to get one done.

As >>9088854 said, most watch people go for mechanical watches, saying they have more soul to them. Be aware watches are not simply time telling utilities but social and aesthetic statements. Having a cheap utilitarian casio tells something about you. Having an expensiv-as-fuck patek phillip puts you into the wealthy-and-classy or wealthy-and-tryhard category, depending on your appearance.
First thing to think about is for what purpose you want to have it. Formal/dress, casual, freetime activities? What design/aesthetical statement do you want to convey? Bauhaus, timeless classics, vintage classics, modern interpretation of vitage classics, modern minimalism, timeless classics, hightech, ...? Do you want to make a social status claim by having a original or can it be a cheap knock-off?
Chinese mech watches start around 200€, non-chinese mech watches start around 600€. In my opinion you should only pay more than 200€ for a quartz watch if you really want something made by that specific known designer.

For dresswatches:
The strap sould be leather, matching your shoes, or metal. No plastics. Should be mechanical. The color scheme should fit your suite and other jewelry, if present. Keep it discreet.

For casual:
Can be anything, pick whatever you like. Think about price point, design statement and social statement.

For sports/recreation activities:
pick something practical that can take a beating. This watch won't be a status symbol, dressy watches will look out of place.

>>9091879
Technically speaking, watches should be legible, meaning they should have enough contrast to be readable (especially regarding minimalist watches).
The visual business of the dial should match your dress style and personality.
The dial should be visually balanced, look at pointer thickness, pointer shape, color distribution, typeface if it has numbers on it, ...
If you want your watch to scream "I'm an art critic!!" you can go for eccentricity, otherwise please don't.

My personal opinion:
Don't be a tryhard and by one of those oversized watches.
Don't by the minimalist watches, they are impractical and the signal that you thought about which watch to wear but that you didn't educate yourself enough to by a decent watch.

You clearly don't know anything about Rolexes. The 214270 (39mm Explorer) has:

-similar cost to the DateJust
-improved bracelet clasp making it better than about all but the glidelock clasps
-movement with much better magnetic/shock resistance compared with even the current subC
-subjective, but more reserved look than a Sub or Datejust with fluted bezel, which is a positive to me

That's what they became famous for.
I don't like the look very much myself, but that's the design Dieter Rams made, who is the personification of bauhaus in industrial design.
So, if you are really hardcore serious about bauhaus design as in "form follows function", that watch is for you.
