It's a very impressive watch and those hand carved leaves are incredible but it leaves the impression that you get when going in an expensive middle eastern hotel. In that it clearly cost freight-loads of bullion, is made exquisitely by people who are the top of their craft but completely over-done in the styling in an attempt to appear more valuable.

Restraint is the essence of what should have made that watch.

The problem is that they decided to carve every single tiny bit of the case, pushers, lugs, crown and bezel posibles AND also give it an excentric lugs desing to allow it to twist and revel the other side. That's simply too much. They already have it before or, could learn from others solution in dealing with so much complication and hadwork. Pic related.

Why do you think so? Automatic watches are like expensive toys and don't exist for functional purposes since a long time ago, why would they disappear in the next decades?

>> No.9045268

>>9045230
In the last 50 years of so more than half of all traditional watchmaking technics have vanished as in died with the watchmakers.

Did you knew almost all guilloché on dials is made with machines that are close to a hundred years old and that none is trying to fabricate more and several other can't be repaired anymore?

Real traditional watchmaking (aka the carving on that Patek case, the hand painting of Lange's big date disk, handmade Cotes de Geneve, manpushed Clou de Paris engraving, wood black polished anglage, etc...) cannot compete with modern high end watchmaking technics (Rolex, for example) because is a bad business model and will eventually disappear.

In the time F.P. Journe makes a single gorgeous dial as my Chronometré Bleu's, Rolex makes around a thousand watches (good watches, I'm not arguing that) and profits like a mother fucker in comparition.

A few days ago I was talking with Stephen Forsey (yes, from Greubel-Forsey) and he told me he was really happy he stared a program to teach young watchmakers forgotten watchmaking technics and that is awesome, but when I asked how may students the program supported he told me: One for now, eventually five.

I wept silentely

Fuck. I hit the post button before ending.

As I was saying, is not that mechanical watches will disappear, but the artistry side of traditional watchmaking is by now as old as it can self-sustain and we'll see it vanish.

And this doesn't constricts to watches the original formulas for the white faced wheels that were sold with turn of the twentieth century cars is lost as well, no one can replicate the exact same color.

I understand what you mean, improvements in the automation of automatic watches will blurr the line between mass-produced and hand made watches pushing artisanal techniques to an ever-shrinking niche market.

While what you said is true, I don't think that's enough to kill traditional brands like Patek Philippe because you pay exactly for the privilege of owning something hand made. It's like saying that stainless steel will kill white gold because they look the same thing; yes, it'true that stainless steel might have displaced a big part of the white gold market, but arguing that one will kill another is a bit of exaggerated in my opinion. Or like saying that mass-produced suits will extinguish professional tailors.

You got me wrong m8. Patek, Lange, Audemars, Vacheron, Journe (hopefully) Jaeger, etc... will still be there. They'll still exist by the time PP's 300 anniversary comes, but they won't be the same; they won't be the niche (well, kinda) of traditional hand watchmaking technics that they are yet today.

PP 5175 is Patek showing off the traditon they have mastered in 175 years, when their horological masters die there might non be any successors left. :-(

Just to give you an idea of what is happening, take Laurent Ferrier's case.

The momment monsieur Ferrier left Patek Philippe, Patek subtly slowed all toubillon productions and sales. Why? Because at some point or another all toubillon watches passed directly through Laurent Ferrier's hands and Patek needed some time to capacite others watchmakes to achive the exact same quality that the former Technical and Product Director imprinted in their complicated watches.

This is still, and will always be (and thereore die because of it) a rare and truly talented reign of the very few.

Hello,

I'm looking for a watch and I consider buying the "Maurice Lacroix Elirox Chronograph".
It's in my budget and comes close to what I'm looking for. Unfortunately I'm not rich yet so I can't afford some fancy watch with open squelette parts or automatic. Mostly I want the watch to be thin and to have a metalband, and the clock-face should be rather simple with thin parts. Although I don't like this band 100%, it's okay.
What do you think of it?

While I want to get it soon, it's certainly not in the pipline. If I sold off my entire collection at the moment I could probably grab one, but I like a couple of these too much to sell them off.

I am really thinking about sending off my Skyfighter. I just don't like it as much as I thought I would. It's a nice watch, but I'm just not connecting with it. It's also not the only one I'm looking to send off either, a couple in here were definitely impulse purchases that had their novelty wear off.

If I were you I'll get rid of 1,4,5 and 6 and keep only the Seikos, the Orients, your new Cerberus and the Helgray (you can use your nato collection on it).

Remember you should try to keep upgrading the quality of your watches gradually, as constant as you can.

You're about on the same view as me. 1 is a Poljot alarm from the early 90s. I really underestimated it's size and I'm just not diggin' it so it'll probably be gone soon.

4 I will keep hands down. It's a Techne Sparrowhawk II and I absolutely adore it. I fawned over it for a good couple years before I became a WIS and really enjoy it. It usually lived on nato straps, trying out a different 2 piece.

5 is a Rossling & Co. quartz. It's my 'fun' nato watch and looks great with most nato straps and relatively cheap. I'll probably hold onto it 'till I get my Rossling & Co. automatic to take it's place.

6 is a modded Seiko 5. Got it, wore it, it's alright but no longer tickles my fancy.

I'm looking at sending off the Poljot, Skyfighter, modded Seiko 5, and the Union on the end to make room and cash for a few others. Been eying a Steinhart OVM and a Prototipo. Might pick up a used Techne Harrier with a 9015 too.

>almost every mechanical watch still contain a Breguet spring.

What.

Breguet, the person, invented the hairspring but it is not known as a "breguet spring". If you mean to say that "almost every watch contains a breguet overcoil", that's not true either.

The overcoil is an upward bend in the hairpsring that brings the terminal curve closer to the center of the hairspring, improving its concentricity during expansion and contraction and, therefore, the watch's isochronism.

Most watches have some kind of bend in the terminal curve, usually referred to as a "dogleg", but these are not the same as a breguet overcoil.

tfw can justify $600+ shoes, $3500+ jackets and $300 shirts

but a watch over $1500 is stupid in your opinion even though you love certain high end watches

i like to stick to these low end disposable watches, i had that vintage cartier tank for like 6 months and stressed everytime i smacked it agaisnt the cheap aluminum door handle of a taco bell

now with a $500 seiko i don't give a fuck about straches or the crystal or the bracelet

Movement vs movement speaking, Patek still holds the upper hand regarding finishing, but they aren't alone up there, A. Lange & Söhne is the only other non-independent that shares the first place when it comes to decorating and finishing.
An equally shared second place belongs to Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin. Third would go to JLC, Breguet, Roger Dubuis, Richard Mille, some others and so on...
Again, this classification is only from a construction, finishing and decoration point of view. If brand vs brand, la Grand Maison (Jaeger LeCoultre) should be way up there as virtually all Richmont Group brands benefits frome their developpment, Renauld & Papi (AP's dream team) had co-worked with them to investigate new materials and PP's Advanced Research is basically supported by JLC own reaserch.

Depreciation wasn't a huge factor, it was more finding something unique, high quality and that I really liked. I just don't know as much about Zenith as a brand than their rivals (AP, Patek, Rolex, Omega ect...) John Goldberger seems to think they're at least worth collecting.

I do like the cali dials Ancon uses though. But then I could just go and buy a Maranez for half the price.

I don't have that problem. I don't like it because I'm thinking it could have lume hands instead. already less functional. I'm picky about features adding and missing.

>it looks like it's trying to be a dressy and tool diver at once.

I totally agree with that but I think it makes the watch interesting in the first place in a jack of all trades kind of way. I like it and would wear it.

Swiss concept suck mate, you can definitely get a discount as they don't move that much stock.

I don't bother with them unless I wanna see rolex and i price compare them to others. They tried to shaft a mate with omegas and I just sent him to my jeweller.

and Zenith is nowhere near a rival to Rolex, Patek or AP.... not even close. Barely against Omega

Good point re lume.

Jack of all trades, master of none. Just doesn't do it for me, but that's okay. Would you consider buying it or does the lume factor put you off?

I noticed this on the divers subforum on WUS. I love it. It's got the Tuna vibe going on and as someone rightly said, it looks like a Tuna and a Doxa had sex. Pics of other variants in next post.

Given that it's a Borealis I wouldn't expect this to cost more than $500.

Actually it's got a 9015 so it will probably cost more than $500. I thought it had an NH35.

So Maybe $6-700? Keep in mind the case is far from generic so I imagine there'd be quite a cost involved for tooling (or whatever).

Not to sound argumentative, I'm just curious as to the specifics of your opinion. Granted Zenith are nowhere near an AP or Patek in regards to quality and hand finished detail (this is reflected in the price difference). Where are they lacking precisely in regards to rolex though? The el primero 410 movement was used in daytona's for a long time, with an impeccable reputation. So do you then think it's in the finish or just small details? I know the rolex will hold its value far better and be more recognisable (although the latter is almost a negative for me at least)
