I'm looking at getting some sort of wingtip boots such as this one

http://www.dsw.com/shoe/aston+grey+staten+wingtip+boot?prodId=307871

How do boots like these hold up in the winter? I live in MI and our winters can be harsh. I do have heavy duty boots if it's really bad out, but for typical wear in mostly urban environments, how would these hold out?

Trickers best invest in a well made pair. Brogues look cheap and tacky when its some random mall brand.

Here is their Ebay factory page. Some good deals on auctions here and there.

I would recommend skipping the cheap boots (anything from a big box retailer is likely to be cheap) and buying a quality pair that will last a really long time. I got these Yuketens on sale for about $200 and they've got a welted Vibram sole and quality materials. You're about halfway to a nice pair of discounted quality boots so why get something cheap?

Expensive boots most definitely are capable of lasting many winters, but you want rubber soles for winter/rain, leather soles not so much. Dainite, commando or vibram are all good soles.

Absolutely. You have to consider the sole (durability, resistance to slipping/water, etc.) and the quality of the materials and construction. If you get a quality pair of shoes and take care of them, even if it's just the occasional polish or leaving shoe trees in them, they'll last for years, if not forever. You can get most high end shoes/boots resoled.

the disadvantage of cheap footwear is the poor construction and materials. They might last a while but they don't have the longevity, design, support, and general level of quality that nicer shoes have.

Expensive boots most definitely are capable of lasting many winters, but you want rubber soles for winter/rain, leather soles not so much. Dainite or commando are both good and vibram as a previous poster mentioned makes good soles, but honestly commando looks like shit on any nice boot.

nice cop, I was pretty bummed when those went on sale and they didn't have my size

but that sole is beyond awful on snow and ice. I have a few pairs with the same sole and it's even worse than the vibram christy, which is bad.

plus... suede for winter? did you read the opening post?

those boots are great but they'd be horrible for OP. and I'm pretty sure blue button shop only has like one size left anyway
