Raw Denim 101:
http://www.rawrdenim.com/2011/09/the-essential-raw-denim-breakdown-our-100th-article/

If you need some more information, these two articles from rawrdenim are fantastic starting points.
Buying Your First Pair - A simple five-step guide
Selvedge Denim - A comprehensive explanation

Quick tips to anyone who wants to get into it
>Be patient, you don't need raws right away!
I know nobody wants to be dropping 300 bucks on Pure Blue Japan denim, but you don't have to have to settle on Levi's because you don't have the money right now. Take a month, and save up for a midrange brand. Chances are, most flagship pairs aren't going anywhere.

>How does X fit?
Blue owl workshop's measurements are usually consistent with one another. Measure a pair you like according to their guide, and compare it with measurements on their site. If you find a better price, then grab it somewhere else afterwards

>What brands?
Tricky question. The sticky denim section has a huge brand list, and most are agreed to be good quality. At the end of the day, as long as a brand is agreed to be "good," it just comes down to fit and color which is a personal preference.

>Raw denim is a troll
Then don't buy it

>But you shouldn't buy it!
Thanks for sharing! :)

you can always get them hemmed for ~$20.

for mid range denim it honestly doesn't get much better than japan blue denim from Denimio. it's head and shoulders better than naked and famous.

anyways my contest PBJ XX-012s came in the other day and holy shit they're the sickest pair of clothing i've ever owned. the texture and irregularity on the denim is fucking unbelievable.
(pic related, slub fucking city)

unfortunately i mis-sized and they're a bit too tight for me, but quite a few people did the same thing so we're all going to trade around until everyone has a pair in their proper size.

It's not "I want to look like a hobo", more of an appreciation for all the work that goes into the hand-distressed pieces and that I really like distressing when done properly.
I dont think the Kapital look is looking like a hobo, it's just a form of workwear that focuses heavily on distressed pieces and whimsical Japanese trends. Like yeah they put out a ton of crazy patchwork stuff, but they do a lot more than that.

I could ask why "sick fades" are seen as desireably, you're literally paying $200 for jeans you could buy for $20 at your local american eagle or hollister, but then I'd also be over-simplifying it and making blanket statements :^)

OP here, the pic is far different than a brown weft. I believe they dyed half of the threads brown, half blue, and wove them together.

An actual brown weft (rather than beige) would probably give an effect like a black weft I bet.

Thinking of either copping the Slub SKs, or the Dark SKs, or just regular SKs. (From Right to Left)

are they bad denim? no. are they worth $700? fuck no. the denim is unremarkable and the cut isn't unique anymore. if you know anything about denim construction and the nature of the fabric you would understand that after a certain price point you are paying for unique cuts and characteristics of the fabrics, and in some cases(like this one) you pay for the brand name. personally I am quite brand agnostic and I don't think that there's anything about these jeans that justifies their price. you don't have to handle them in person to see that.

The good news is, large jeans only really look bad if they're too large at the leg opening, but they look fine even when they have a lot of room in the thigh, but are slimmer from the knee down.

If I were you I'd find a good straight leg pair (possibly a very mild slim straight cut if you can, think APC new standards at the slimmest), and get the leg opening tailored so that it becomes more of a carrot cut.

Basically, just avoid 70's style, elephant paw jeans and you're good. Even if you have good calves, they'll never be nearly as big as your quads.

Kapital Century denim is mah shit.

Anyone else in here tried to do any of your own DIY kakishibu coating?

Pic related is an old pair of Levi's selvedge Calder's in a dark charcoal grey raw denim that I gave a coating to a while back. Pic is old, they look much more interesting with the extra year or so of wear they have had since then. Thinking about ordering some more and coating these again as well as some other shit.

Also did a thrifted Ecru colored oxford shirt and an old LL Bean cotton sweater with the last batch, they didn't work out as wearably as the jeans. I like how the kakishibu is subtle against the dark original color.

Kakishibu is really cool, it's more like a natural coating than a dye really. It's made from persimmon tannin. Color changes over time with wear, sunlight exposure and oxidization. It's also affected by a ton of different modifiers like iron, wood vinegar, and baking soda, which you can add with the original coating or afterward to change the color from the natural reddish chestnut brown to a more dusty brown to grey and even into shades of black and indigo depending on the strength and type of modifier. This guy's blog has a lot of cool info and videos about it:

http://bandanna-almanac.com/

He lives in Japan and is friends with a bunch of the Kapital crew, so he has the inside scoop on a lot of their stuff. He used to post on sufu a lot and did proxy service at a nice discount for a lot of Japan only releases, not sure if that's still the case. I've really not done a whole lot of other dying projects, just messed around with dip-dye and standard RIT, some minimal messing around with other natural dyes like walnut ink and coffee and stuff. I really want to try experimenting with sumi-e ink more, I like the subtle shades of grey and charcoal it produces.

Other than that, the military parka in pic related hanging with the jeans is a French Army parka that I hand waxed using otter wax and slimmed slightly to fit with a heavy duty industrial sewing machine. It was super time-consuming but came out great and pretty waterproof! The other parka is just an old Pendleton parka I had thrifted and washed hanging out to dry.

For basic repairs, the traditional Japanese stitching method the Kapital guys use is just a super simple basic running stitch, (in and out to form a dotted line on both sides of the fabric,) called Sashiko. They just use a midweight to heavy natural cotton thread and go over and over whatever spot by hand to create that unique bumpy texture like in the denim in OP pic. (though the sashiko in the century denim jeans in OP is done as part of the weaving process with a machine, it is meant to mimic the traditional hand stitch).

Also it's funny you use that pic, that's what I was in Japan for last year, on a trip with my Kendo team. We were training with some friends/former members/teachers in Tokyo and then in Osaka, but it was a short week filled with lots of practice and I didn't get a chance to visit many clothing shops.

I LOVE the way worn in kendogi look after a lot of use and washes. They are always dyed with traditional Japanese indigo. Fades are cool, but having to hand wash them and hang to dry separate from everything you don't want to be blue is a pain in the ass, especially because you have to wash them regularly with all that sweaty practicing making them stink to high heaven.

You mean like in some sort of weird indigo-dyed martial arts uniform as a noragi-type-thing with indigo raw denim outfit?

Yeah dude. You will look fucking weird as fuck. I wouldn't wear an indigo top with indigo jeans at the same time for one thing, especially not in the same shade, to "fade them at the same time," it will look bad.

Also a Kendogi is not really something you should wear in normal life. I suppose it could be done. If I saw someone doing it I might look at them a little weird, and if some Kendo instructor saw you doing it, he would probably think it disrespectful, though he would never say anything to you as Japanese are too beta and polite.

If you're looking for a similar garment that is cut and intended more for modern casual wear then check out something like the noragis Visvim makes. If that's out of your price range, there are similar cheaper options, including real vintage noragi or hanten or hasso type jackets from Japan.

If you think you can pull it off go ahead and get a keikogi from a kendo supplier, but a nice one can run upward of $250 to $300 or more, and they are cut very roomy, and the material is stiff. It could be done in a really avant-garde fit, but it would for sure be a high-level maneuver.

From normal casual wear. New ones come dark dark indigo, like raw denim, but way overdyed, like almost black. The one in that pic has been worn for several hours of grueling high-intensity practice, likely on a daily basis, for many years. Quite possibly decades.

It looks like bits have been replaced and repaired, and those fades are from sweat soaked armor-cords, pads, and laquered bamboo plates rubbing against it over and over and over, anlong with many many washings and whacks from practice swords.

I've only recently started wearing edwins regularly, but they do a gorgeous slim black (ed-80s), stacks very nicely and has a very open weave, it's a joy to wear. For reference, whilst edwin have been moving much more into the mainstream denim market lately, they're the original jp denim label. They bought all of the levi machines from the US after the war and are the reason japanese denim is king now. So they have a great heritage to them, but have definitely been surpassed in terms of denim craftsmanship by the likes of samurai. Still beautiful jeans though.

The quality is substantially better than any of the aforementioned three, and the cut is far, far better for my leg shape. The cut thing is going to be pretty dependent on your body type, but quality wise, at the very least, is great. Not as heavy as my old pair of unbranded (circa 2010 or so, don't know if they've changed things up), but probably heavier than my N&F and Nudie stuff.

Hey,
>>8973176
Here.

New Cures just came in, fit is great but a little tight. I'm not concerned as I've heard that A.P.Cs stretch a lot. The most surprising thing for me is how stiff the fabric is. I've heard people talk about "stiff" denim online but I've never felt denim that I would describe as stiff before.

Quality-wise they blow the Levis and Naked and Famous jeans I own out of the water. The pockets feel strong and not like some pouches made out of fabric scraps, the denim itself fits skinny but feels incredibly durable. With my Naked and Famous jeans I felt like if I moved my legs a certain way the stitches would tear, but with these it's like having some sort of magical armor on my legs that will protect my delicate thighs from any and all suburban hazards. Also I wish that the leg openings had a bit more taper because they fit surprisingly straight which almost looks bootcut-ish compared to how tight the calves are. Another downside is that the selvedge edge is apparently not visible/cut out with the New Cure cut so when you cuff them you don't get looks of lust from slightly overweight, late 20s denimheads(this is really a plus tbh).

technically, denim is a type of twill. Twill is a fabric weaving style, and denim is twill made from cotton fabric and dyed with indigo, if my understanding is correct. So to say that twill is just washed denim and stitched into a chino pattern would probably be correct.

This can happen with tailoring as well, trust me.
It depends on how the inseam is constructed.
Just make sure you ask your tailor before you jump at it.
And yes, the knee will be off. If you buy regular fitted jeans it won't be too bad but anything slightly fitted will stack below the knee.
Been there, done that. It depends how much you take off. From 31-32 to 30 will turn out acceptable, 34 to 30 will look bad.

Hey guys, sorta torn on my next pair. Thinking either United Stock Dry Goods or Rogue Territory.

I'd have to wait for the USDG to come back into stock in my size, but that'll probably be about the time I get paid next anyways.

I like the USDG because they are indigo/indigo, and dig a lot of the electric blue fades I see of indigo/indigo denim. But I also really dig the overall look of a black weft like the Dark SKs, although I haven't really seen a lot of fades I've been a fan of except like one guy, and they looked pretty nice.
I also kinda dig that blue selvedge line on the USDGs.

But really, it is just coming down to weft. I don't mind forking up the little extra money for some Rogues myself, although spending a little less is always fine.

My heart isn't really set on one or the other right now, so it is kind of up in the air. Cuts are pretty identical, so I don't have to worry in that department.

A droop-faced Swedish-American jew with short black hair was teaching a class on Tom Wolfe, a known postmodernist gasbag. ”Before the class begins, you must get on your knees and accept that wearing bombers with suits is an aesthetic for today’s titans of industry, for a new kind of “master of the universe”!”

At this moment, a brave, sunken-eyed ex-rock guitarist, who fully recognized the fact that nothing tastes as good as Wasabröd after a long fast, boldly stood up and held up a pair of jeans. "These are inch for inch an affordable copy of the most fashionable skinny jeans on the planet, most important garment for people in the world today. Do you even know the measurement of the leg opening here?”

The arrogant professor smirked quite Jewishly and smugly replied “Why, they can’t be smaller, or more affordable than the $290 stonewashed jeans I designed and wear, which measure 19 centimeters across the leg opening lying flat.”

”Wrong. These are 15cm jeans from my latest collection for Sweden's largest luxury fashion house, Acne Studios, available for less than $200 MSRP. No less than 13 noveau riche Asian young adults work for me only to score an employee discount so they can instagram fits with my jeans.”

The professor was visibly shaken, and dropped his lanyard and telescope. He stormed out of the room in his stonewashed denim and melange fleece sweatshirt, crying crocodile tears. There is no doubt that at this point our professor, Patrik Ervell, wished he had pulled himself up by his bootstraps and become more than a recovering nerd who dropped out of college. He wished so much that he was an influencer but he made his life counterfeiting SNS Herning sweaters instead.

The students applauded, skipped lunch that day, and understood Swedish hardcore punk as superior to both NY hip-hop and ambient techno. An eagle named “Carhartt WIP” flew into the room and perched atop an enormous shearling jacket, shedding a single tear. The latest issue of Acne Paper was read aloud several times, and the spirit of Per Yngve Ohlin himself showed up and demonstrated the proper technique for crucifying rodents.

The professor lost his tenure and was fired the next day and had no other option but to join diplomat corps and take up work somehwere in Africa where he contracted ebola from drinking tap water, and perished.

The brave Swedish designer's name? Jonny Johansson.

All Brits look like rotten toothed fucking faggots. British “people” (and I use the term in the loosest possible way, as there is nothing even remotely human about these bumfucking, backwards savages) are literally the worst, shittiest, lowest form of life ever shat out upon this great, green Earth. I completely and utterly loathe, nay, detest every single aspect of “Great” Britain and its subhuman inhabitants. I hate their asinine excuse for an “accent” (“Oy wot pip pip cheerio govnuh and a birra oll vat roit roit Bob’s yer uncle”). For a country that has the audacity to call itself “England” their grasp of the English language is at best, tenuous. And their insipid excuse for a “culture” - “Oy moit lets put on the telly and go shag a fag at the pub before we get beheaded by Muslims for not paying our TV licenses”. If every single British man, woman and child was slowly and painfully strangled to death, not a single tear would be shed for them. The British and their fucking island are nothing less than a blight, a blemish, a gargantuan black mark on the record of humanity. Look at their hilarious excuse for an “empire”. It takes a fuckload of nerve to bitch and moan about countries like Russia and Germany expanding their territory when the Shitish Empire enslaved a quarter of the fucking planet. The British are truly a mistake - I am not a religious man, but I have to believe in some sort of God - I mean, something as truly awful as Britain and its “people” cannot merely come about by accident. No, there is a God, and he is a cruel, vindictive son of a bitch, if the existence of British “people” are anything to go by. I can only sit and hope with all of my heart that something truly and utterly terrible befalls the British nation and its inhabitants.
