It's called a bezel. It is meant to be a time reference for divers, to give a clear visual to time remaining oxygen. The 5 minute increments help to avoid decompression sickness. Before dive computers came to the market, dive watches were an absolute must. I still wear mine, though, just in case.

Even if you don't dive, you can still use a bezel for pretty much anything. Use it for cooking, parking spaces, etc. etc.

I bet it's (or at least can be) useful, however, I simply find it aesthetically dubious and weird. And if the bezel can move on its own under the sleeve (it can't right?) it would irk me, make me adjust it every second, making it working lighter and needing more adjustments and triggering me that much more often.
Some models are nice, though.

Also I'm not sure if the glass can be replaced and on newer models they use that proprietary strap attachment.

Such a shame, they have really good designers, I wish they worked for Orient.

I've promised one guy to make photos of that Shanghai I've copped so I think I'll shoot the Skagen as well for the sake of science and post in one of the next threads. The scratches and all.

because the crystal ("glass on the front") is arcrylic aka plastic. even the $10 walmart watches use mineral crystal (low end glass but alas still glass)

>I'm not sure if the glass can be replaced and on newer models

you can remove the movement (easy since it's just a spacer equipped cheap china quartz movement) and use a press to replace it.

i doubt the brand is high end enough to sell replacement parts, moreso skagen watches are so cheap they are built to be disposable... since the labor alone replacing a crystal is pretty pricey...

> newer models they use that proprietary strap attachment.

no, alot of watch brands have case specific method of attaching bands, this is not a trait exclusive to this low end watch brand...the watch in his image cleraly has cast lugs that were drilled through, which take standard spring bars it's a cheaper method of spitting out these low end base metal brass plated cases.

can't stand these faux watch experts on here missing BASIC shit talking as if skagen/mondaine are exclusive in design and use propreitary everyhting

when in reality it;'s a run of the mill low end watch you can pick up at target from merona brand

> crystal

I've scratched mine and it doesn't look like scratched plastic, it looks like scratched glass. Wherever they post specs, the crystal is listed as mineral glass not acrylic. Moreover, there are quite a lot of complaints it cracks easily, which is typical for mineral glass.

> glass replacement

I didn't say it can't be removed. I doubt you can easily get a replacement, do you see the difference? On the other hand if you post a link to a source of spare crystals (preferably sapphire) which would match skagens I'll think you are an arrogant asshole but a useful one, too.

> strap attachment

On Skagen's official web site in this year's collection only five pieces have conventional spring bar, all the rest have this stupid two screws system, good luck replacing straps there.

> exclusive in design

Skagen is special in a way. One of the few big low end manufacturers which do not think its target audience are stereotypical pimps or autists (hello there Mondaine, Nixon, Diesel etc.).

I didn't mean to say they use 'proprietary anything' as in 'proprietary innovative' or 'proprietary high quality', I rather meant it's difficult to replace.

Neither did I claim to be an expert, I've posted what I've learned wearing one for a couple of months, so please stop bitching.

Throws me of every time. I also like the sweeping motion of an analog clock more.

Gold coating a mass produced budget movement is kind of silly. It's like putting a spoiler on a Volvo 240.

>What is LUME PAINT?
Luminescent paint. It's for reading your watch at night. A basic feature that you can expect in all but the dressiest of dress watches. There really isn't an excuse for not having it on this watch.

You'll also find that most people here are opposed to skeleton watches on the low budget end.

I'm looking forward to it. Backer numbah 10 for the $200 early bird slot. 42mm is a good case size, 11mm isn't too tall either. Don't really care either way about the display back or rotor. Interested to see how it'll wear since it doesn't have traditional lugs too. Black dial stainless case here.

no, its ugly and seiko 5's aren't good watches

people will tell you about how great seiko is for using top quality parts/ inhouse movement etc etc

none of it applicable to seiko 5 watches...outsourced production, plastic day/date wheels, sub par base metal cases (rather than stainless, or brass plated chrome on mainline) arcrylic exhibition case rather than glass on mainline, no saphire just mineral on the mainline 7s26 watches

and arcrylic on many seiko 5

$450 goes a long way in watches that retail under $900....and with seiko the difference is immense.

ditto the other 7s26 movement mainline watches

For the price you can get SOO much better pieces. Even a cheap Frederique Constant for something classic, or a simple Longiness. You just have to lurk more m8.

Also, besides what others here think, a good watch has a lot more than a saphire crystal. The overall quality of the entire watch should be as god as posible in perspective of the pricetag. This means case, dial, hands, movement, crystal, crown, lugs, and strap or bracelet, design and intemde purpouse. Besides their saphire crystals, Technomarine pretty much drops the ball in almost any other categorie.

Romans didn't actually give a fuck whether one used IIII or IV or indeed any other numeral variants, as long as it added up the same.

Because celebrities got paid shitloads of money for endorsing stuff, this isn't even restricted to watches, and people buy this shit cause tbey think is good due to the endorsing.

Take Leonardo Di Caprio, for example. He got paid 12 million USD for endorsing Tag Heuer but outside of a promotional event hw wouldn't wear them at all. He is known amomg the conoissours for collecting (and using) mainly super high end JLC and VC, I'm talking +100,000 USD per piece here.

Also, using IIII gives a simetrical balance to the VIII wrotten in the other side of the dial. This is the main reason most companies still use this sintaxis today.

Here Jean Dujardin endorses JLC.

If that is so, I think Tag Heuer is the one who doesn't need to endorse. It is more popular than JLC and VC. Even Rolex has endorsers even though it is already famous if not the most famous watchmaker.

>> No.8926030

Because true independant watch reviewers don't waste their time with sub-par end brands, the lowest they'll review is Oris or Frederique Constant. Also, there are a few bad reviews of Thechnomarines. Lurk more.

As the other anon said, brands like JLC or VC don't use endorsement, they use ADVERTISING (like magazines or even TV comercials). For those they do need a good looking fella or beautiful girl, often famous, to present their products, but this people do not become public faces for the brand, they won't be force to be present or speak up the brands in any social events because this is considered tacky among the high-end luxury market.
Or, they would patrocinate some kind of event, like a golf tournament (Rolex), an important horse race or Polo tournement (JLC), an art exposition (AP), an important classica concert for charity (Breguet) an historique auction for fund raising (VC) and so on... (I've been invited to all of this and more) but they won't make this celebrities endorse the brand (althou they are contracted fir a particular model) anywhere outside that particular campaign. With te exception of AP wich pulls out horrible special editions for certain people.

>acrylic caseback
Don't care. Acrylic fulfills the same purpose that a saphire one would: it displays the movement. Having a higher end caseback is a waste of money anyway. The caseback isn't going to be exposed enough to get scratched or shattered. Why should it be anything but acrylic?

The day/date wheels are plastic because metal wheels require lubrication, while plastic ones do not. This results in the watch surviving longer without maintenance.

The end links are junk, sure, but that goes for any <$200 watch, and even many >$400 watches. In any case, almost any Seiko 5 looks better on leather.

QED, fuckboy.

What's weird is I have a pretty large hand and wrist. I'm 6'3 190 so you have to be enormous to make that seem "proportional." I don't mind the big face. It's pretty comfortable.

Smaller proportional time pieces look pointless on me, like a useless bracelet almost.
