Does anyone know the difference between these:

and these

http://www.amazon.com/Chippewa-1901M16-Plain-Wedge-Cordovan/dp/B00J04NKQS

They have different logos and shoe string. It says in the top link that they are oro russet leather, but it look more like cordovan to me. It's almost impossible to find any others like the top image but i found this on google which looks a lot like corodovan.

If you're looking for slightly cheaper balmorals, you could always check out Loake/Herringshoes or even Meermin. One of the calf/suede balmorals I've seen at Meermin looked fantastic, but I've never been that fond of the fit in their shoes. Their dark brown suede chelsea also looks really, really good.

in the world of boots, their price is not really high

it really depends where you are tho
if you're in the usa you can get them well below retail pricing with all sorts of coupons and sales and shit
if you're in europe or the uk, maybe not if you can find an alternative.

i am of course referring solely to their Heritage Line of pseudo-workboots, and not their actual work boot lines.

let's put it this way, RW heritage line are the first step into really quality boot territory

after them, you will start to pay more and more for less and less material benefit - ie. luxury.

i'm a fan, perhaps not necessarily of their styling, but at least of their general construction which outclasses those considered below their level (thorogood and chippewa) in the american heritage workboot styling, AND outclasses a boot many consider, erroneously IMO, to be above their level: the wolverine 1000 mile.

so yeah, imo they are worth their price, perhaps more than many other boots

if you're somewhere where they are markedup horrendously then perhaps consider other brands.

as someone who wears the 8 inch steel toed version of this exact boot to work construction all summer long (plus styling them into the occasional fall fit) i can say that thorogood makes really really high quality boots for the price. they are all made in wisconsin and all the employees are union if u care abt that stuff

i would just say to try them on. despite the high quality of the boots themselves, sizing seems a little inconsistent.

yea but dont forget to mention that half the non heritage boots are made in china and are non-welted with inconsistent sizing and quality but similarly high prices

>How to protect from creasing?
you can't
they will crease as soon as you take your first step, perhaps even as you shove your fat foot into them without a shoehorn
rube

mitigate creasing by conditioning the leather (including the leather lining) and using shoetrees or boottrees (depending on the style).
don't force them in if you think the trees might stretch the boot

creases will happen
deal with it

>but similarly high prices
really? I thought the imported stuff was cheaper than the US made workboot stuff, not including heritage line.

thorogood and chippewa aren't as high quality
they skimp on one crucial part of construction
they're not the only ones, wolverine skimps the same thing with their 1k's, which is why I just can't recommend them

chippewa's leather has gotten shitty for their two more popular heritage boots lately
might just be a phase though, and I think their heritage style line will only become more interesting

red wing can maintain better leather qc because their own their own tannery, one of the few bootmakers/shoemakers in the whole world that have claim to their own tannery, and are thus not susceptible to the whole "let's blame the tannery for our shitty leather" routine. everything they make they're responsible for

lastly, redwing do resoles and refurbishments
they just have a more comprehensive support apparatus for dealing with boot repair

i don't know what thorogood and chippewa have as far as resoling goes, but I do know that say wolverine do not have the capacity to even resole boots you've bought from them - you've gotta go to an independent cobbler and hope they don't fuck up too badly
and when your 1k's need a rewelt?
ha
good luck with that

I would like to think that chippewa offers a resole/reconditioning service as well

but they are not equal, if we're talking about their respective fashion lines and NOT their actual work boot lines
i know nothing about them

what, have you been slogging through actual shit and grime or something?
have fun with that and ruining your shit

condition the boots, inside and out
after the conditioner has been absorbed (depending on the kind you've used), you could use some black polish on the more discolored scuffs to make them black again if they were particularly deep

Just copped the ones in OP and I am loving them.

You can actually use black boot cream on the sole if you want them completely black. Still, I don't think I'll be doing that because

1. I expect the "stripe" to be toned down slightly with regular wear and tear.

2. I think it offers a nice visual break and

3. Since it's from a high quality sole, the stripe it gives is actually a mark of quality, as opposed to just a black boot with a black rubber sole.

i don't get it, why is it so difficult for yurpeans (sans britbongs) to get affordable, decent footwear ie. >500USD?

America has a whole slew of qualityish brands, from work boot thorogood-chippewa-redwing-wolvernine at the low end, custom nicks and whites at the upper end, and allen edmonds and alden for dressier styles.

UK has all the Northhamtonshire makers that run the gamut from budget to godtier.

from reading the pleas on /fa/ over a couple of years, it seems that in most of yurp it's all chinese made imported junk at the low end, virtually NOTHING mid range and then the super duper expensive custom shit and the like at the top end.

there've always been quality issues with wolverine, especially with their soles falling off within 6 months. The leather is also been known to be sub par quality. they use a shitty cardboard insole, instead of a genuine leather footbed (like red wing)

get a pair of the beckman's or the iron rangers

i figured as much
they're a total rip at 430USD

I they're not worth it the closer to 300USD they get
they're really only viable if you're in the us with all the deals to be had on them there, and exchanges/warranty issues can be swiftly dealt with

i remember reading of one german retailer that just stopped stocking them because of all the qc returns

>Also they sees to scuff Really easily. I opened a fresh box to try on, and they were already scuffed.
that's Chromexcel for you
it's nice enough leather when it's done right (viberg and osb use nicer, thicker grades than wolv that's for sure) but it's very scuffable (more than other kinds? maybe, I'm less careful with my cxl boots so that may distort my view of it)
thats just the nature of the beast
some people just want that worn in look faster and cxl allows for it faster if you don't brush or treat

still, if you could get certified problem free pair of 1k's for 250USD or less then you done well
you might get funky creasing after you first wear it though, but that's the risk of buying cheap
their shape does have a certain charm when worn in though, I'll give them that

otherwise just go red wing or beyond if your budget and inclination allows
