The brands that are hopping on the bandwagon now will never be able to match the fit and fabric of high-end pieces. So long as we away from the tacky prints they'll add to everything to make them "individual" we can probably ride out this mainstream trend in our gothy superiority.

haha we actually dicussed this in my fashion class today. Basically there's three ways trends move through society.

1) Theyre created by high fashion designers based on some personal inspiration and then filter down through different tiers of retail before reaching mass acceptance

2) Theyre created by hip lower class people and then move upward until they catch a designers attention and become high fashion(think mobb deep starting hip hop fashion trends)

3) They start and end in the same social class, but move "horziontally" through different groups and cultures.

In this case the monochrome thing comes from high fashion designers like tricky ricky, over the past year I've seen imitations of his black bombers move lower and lower in fashion retail. It's just now reaching the Gap and going full mainstream.

I'm not sure I quite understand your question. Are you asking if fashion has changed in the last five years? It definitely has. to be honest my perception of fashion comes almost entirely from this board, but I can tell you that in 2011 everyone here was wearing clarks desert boots, raws, and j crew shirts. Then people got into rick owens and gothninja and started acting hostile towards "dadcore". Now people are getting sick of all the black and moving on to other styles(palewave, workwear, normcore). I'm not sure if the trends this board goes through are in any way indicative of what's actually considered fashionable by the industry, but it's a good example of the cyclical nature of fashion.

>> No.8784834

that's interesting. i've only been on this board for a few months, but it kinda sounds like /fa/ in 2011 was r/mfa. you answered my question well. i like what you said about the board not being quite indicative of the fashion industry.

posted this in the other thread but seems like this ones more alive. my question to all the "hip" people who are constantly avoiding fitting in with the plebs is how do you stop liking something you like? most of my wardrobe is based around black, but there are also a lot of different tees/sweaters outerwear in different colors that I own/would like to buy plus so many things you can do with different shades of grey. and regardless of the influence I have gotten from /fa/ and other places, I have a gut level instinct like everyone else as to what I prefer. idk I feel like it's more authentic to base what you buy off of that than to base it off avoiding the mainstream. do you really think RO, Ann D, and Damir Doma are gonna close up shop and call it a day now that gap is selling "monochrome"? You do not know the wrath you have summoned you irrelevant little teenager faggot. Your pathetic life centered around a cesspool of aspergers laden virgins has just gotten you ruined. As you read this, there are literally a private army coming to your house to remove your limbs and fuck the bleeding stumps.

In the meanwhile, how about you show us how much you have in the bank? Show us your girlfriend, and your designer clothing with reciepts to prove you aren't a worthless cretin working at a mall and being a grailedfag.

Oh wait, you can't and you won't. You'll reply with a meme picture, or a "so mad", or some other idiotic beta male drivel. Why? Because your life is worthless shit. You have no value, socially or monetarily. You probably starve yourself to be thin in your parents basement, jacking off to streaming porn because no woman would ever touch you if you paid them to. Face it, man. You may try to claim you're going to do this after college or do that or you're an intern at whatever. You'll never be anything. Nobody will ever love you. Your disgusting clothing will never good enough, your personality will never be good enough, YOU will never be good enough. It gets said occasionally here, but it's true for you. Some people are better off killing themselves. Go ahead and put an internet argument aside and take a long, serious thought about it, and you know I'm right. Go ahead and take pills so it's painless if you have to. Nobody will miss you, in fact, that girl you have a crush on will be happier. You want her to be happy, right? You know what you have to do. Take all those pills. End your life, because we both know it's valueless.

The Gap has a long history of making advertisements that shit all over everything precious or, fuck me for using this word, authentic about clothing. I think they're even worse than Zara at devaluing the concepts, affects, experiences, etc. that get people excited about clothes. They're just the worst.

We don't need to be reminded of that or how fucking hard it is to do creative work and be subversive in 2014, though, certainly not so some conceptless fuccboi with no affect except anxiety indifferent to his own experiences can think he's ahead of trends and better than other people because he's... wearing color?

>>8783704
The color palette isn't Rick, though, although a lot of Rick runoff is hitting the mainstream.

It's just the perennial "black is chic," "[insert that Yohji quote here]", "black is tough," "black is rebellious," "black is #dark" thing that's existed for quite some time.

>>8785022
Lawl no. To the extent the stuff you're talking about has a politics, it's reactionary but too limpid and whingey to constitute a real counterculture like, say, /pol/fags. Let alone a constructive one like we need.

Holy fuck /fa/ can we stop with these threads?

>> No.8785108

>>8785028
Well, why is it better (no need for scare quotes) and more interesting?

I think it's important not to confuse trendhopping with the development of a medium, or the making of things appropriate to their time.

One is a desperate chase without any real reason for it. The other is a result of trying to do things up as well as possible. The difference between trying to be correct and trying to be right.

Necessity isn't just "the mother of invention," it's the pulsing force behind everything. Good design, good living, good anything, the Good is what responds to necessity. And we exist inside moving time, so anything trying to be "timeless" is bound to fail. That's the problem with his contention.

"Better" because it more interesting, more interesting because it prevents us being complacent - it's a breath of fresh air.
