If you're buying Panerai homages, it should be from the ~5 or so "vetted" sites that people from the Watchuseek forum recommend. On the cheap end, this basically means Jackson Tse, Manbushijie or Getat.

Of the lot, Getat is widely considered the best quality. However, he doesn't respond quickly to emails and sometimes his orders take longer.

If you were getting an automatic it might not matter to much, but, for hand-winding watches, Getat is far and away the best since he literally builds them himself and offers tons of customization options.

That's the general breakdown. If you really want to learn your shit then you should be able to easily get there based on what I've written here. Good luck.

>> No.8593507

>>8593293
Lume. Usually the watch hands are painted with lume that absorbs light, and any decent watch has a good enough quality lume that it will last for however long you're in the dark for.

And most people wear automatics, which you also don't have to wind. And which will keep on going instead of needing a battery change.

Other reasons include appreciation for the engineering, history, workmanship, etc. etc. In a day and age where you can look at your phone for perfectly accurate time that is synced with atomic clocks and shit, a watch isn't really needed like it used to be. If you NEED a watch, you have a specialized one like a dive computer for commercial divers. If you're just a normal person a watch is jewelry, something that represents you and what you appreciate and all of that bullshit.

With the exception of the Unico line, I don't like Hublots, since I belive they are overpriced for the movement they come with. Great movement, but not faily priced. Althouth your special edition is at least enjoyable by exoticity.

Yes.
Just checked out their site again and it seems they use legit Swiss movement for their watches.
I'll probably get the 251 series someday, the Are certainly neat looking watches and like most watches they are not really worth the price, you pay extra bucks for how the watch makes you feel (the experience), that neat minimalist look should (at least it does for me) give you a sense of calmness anytime you check the time out. So if you've got 500 bucks to spare, buy em.

Gr8 collection m8. How long have you been into watches? How long did it take to get your collection to what it is now?

Pic related is mine. Just got the bottom left tonight, really happy with it so far. The one next to it is my most recent after that. The others I picked up between this time last year and about February.

I have a Mondaine Big Date. It looks nice, but I doubt that the movement is anything special considering the price. The basic line of watches is also not waterproof so you need to take that into consideration. Personally I just wanted a watch that I thought looked good, and that was relatively cheap (mine cost 200 dollars in Switzerland), so I chose the Mondaine. I bought it over a year ago and I haven't had any problems with it.
In short, if you like the look of it, go for it.

However, I also have several Longiness, Citizens, Seikos, and shit that I have been buying for the last decade or so.

The minute and hour hands are easy to find aftermarket because they're .9mm and 1.5mm respectively which is what many ETA movements of the time used. The problem is finding a fucking .105mm second hand. I'm really hoping ranfft made a typo and it's actually .195.

Yes. Sizewise you won't have problems to find replacements, but remember that your watch has just been regulated to work with the actual weight of the hands it has right now. Even if you think the difference isn't noticible the movement will resent the change. I also don't know if the form of said hands is easy to find.

Normally I woud buy the one with no open face, since most of the movements with open face dials aren't properly finish in the barely minimun. However, the movement's plate in that Orient seems decently polished and with a bit of "anglage" so this time I'll advise to buy the second one, looks quite nice.
Be aware that if you expose it to very sunny days with the light constantly on the dial it may require service sooner because the lubricants in the balance wheel will dry faster.

I think you're giving too much credit to James Bond for popularizing the diver's watch as an acceptable companion to a suit and not giving enough to Rolex and the changing times in the business world. Yes, men used to wear more subtle, classically styled pieces. And at the higher echelons of businessmen, they still do. What you're seeing is the babby's first suit and tie job guys who are latching onto anything that screams expensive from a distance. The watch of choice appears to be the two tone blue and gold submariner.

>> No.8601687

>>8593260
>>8601167
And the Sub definitely doesn't take any part of the FF's design, even if that was/is the case. Regardless of how I feel about the two watches and brands, I think that it's pretty obvious that the Sub reigns supreme in general popularity and by which one gets "copied" more. The FF doesn't get close the the number of homages as the Sub.

>>8601667
Disagree. I agree with the other poster that Bond was a catalyst. However, it is combined with the general move to more casual wear that we see across society, at large. More and more jobs allow more casual dress (mainly business casual with a dress shirt and slacks as opposed to a full suit) and, the more time that goes on, the more "casual" our society seems to become, in general.

Having a popular pop culture icon that was considering by some to be the "pinnacle of manliness" made it more acceptable. It's just like how actors and actresses help to start many different kinds of trends.

An aside: I really hate the blue/gold Sub. It just looks horrible tacky to me.

Dude, you must get it back from your brother, take it to restoring so they can brush off that purple/red shit and wear it. From all four watches you posted is by far the most interesting and rare, followed by the Gp, the Zenith and the Longiness.
