It's not so much that there's anything wrong with the clothes (although there is, almost exactly the same) as with the outfit.

At base, major fashion failures usually stem from people 1) not really understanding the sign system they're trying to play in, 2) not putting a lot of thought into it, and 3) aiming for something not terribly great anyway.

The person you're supposed to think of looking at that graphic thinks a polo reads as "nicer" or "dressier," more "serious" than a t-shirt. He picks out whatever random one ticks all his "this is a polo shirt" checkboxes without actually *looking at* and *feeling* the garment. And he thinks "niceness," "dressiness," "seriousness," and probably some nutso masculine twist on all those are virtuous, or at least impressive.

The most famous example, of course, is the guy who thinks a fedora signifies "classiness" and overtly cares about that (nothing is more declasse), elegance (in a fit otherwise awkward and shoddy like a below code building after an earthquake), and a reactionary masculinity (which it does, but everyone figured out that sucked decades ago).
In truth,

Cargo pants often have a similar deal going on, but their problem is much more often just plain bad materials and patterning.

You could *easily* do what that guy is trying to do without the shittiness or the baggage with a little consciousness, concern, and knowledge. The guy doing that lacks all three, so he's pitiable.

I never owned an X61 myself just by sheer fate, and I'm not familiar with the requirements for chemeng, but I ran comparable old business laptops for years, and there's a lot to recommend them if you don't need more than web browsing, office applications, 720P video watching, etc. I ran Adobeware on them, which worked, though that was slow.

They're cheap, durable, usually well-designed ergonomically (the #1 important thing about a computer) and often visually, especially Thinkpads and some Dell models. They're not theft targets.

The biggest downside is the weight and bulk larger screen models can get, but larger screen laptops are bullshit anyway - hence why I switched this guy to an X61t instead of his T61p.

Upgrade them with an SSD and all the RAM you can, like anything, of course.
