sruli has the same problem as most designers who try to talk about their pieces in any conceptual depth, which is that they created something that's really cool aesthetically by just being good artists with good taste, aesthetic sense, and talent, and then after the fact tried to come up with some six paragraph long thesis statement describing the thought process behind it

i mean if you actually pay attention to what rick, for example, says in his interviews, none of it makes any fucking sense. he's basically just describing what he was thinking about when his aesthetic senses took over and created something 99.99% unrelated; he'll be discussing how he took inspiration from traditional military dress uniforms as he's sending out models in du-rags and asymmetrical tank tops

i just mean that designers are really talented people in a way that has very little to do with the kind of philosophical theorizing that people expect of them, and yet they're all aware of this expectation to the extent that they convince themselves they do more of this theorizing than they really do, so they say some goofy stuff when they're made to 'explain' their pieces
