Stop with the waterproof shoes, please. Stop.
I live in a place where we get a lot of water. A LOT of it. Seattle to be exact. It's raining right now.
If you have low-top waterproof shoes (GoreTex or whatever) it isn't going to help. That is if you're going out side. And that's the idea, right? Because you're out and about and cycling or walking or whatever? Your pants will pull up (as they do) and your socks will get wet and water will travel and you'll have wet feet.
If you're NOT going out then why get the water proof shoes at all? If you're traveling by car or taxi and have an office job then you don't need GoreTex shoes at all.

"But, b-but, anon! I DO go out! And my feet get wet with my shoes I own now!"
Ok, well here're your solutions. You've got two of them.
#1 Socks. Bring an extra pair with you all the time. Swap them out when you need fresh nice and dry socks.
"But that's stupid! I don't have all these cool tech pockets to fill with socks."
Ok, then,
#2 Boots! Yes. Get some damn boots. Or hell, high ankle shoes.

Sounds like you could dress in shorts or light pants, a couple layers for your upper body with a softshell/windbreaker, some trail shoes (low or high) depending on how much you're going to be carrying on your back.

If you dress in layers it will be easy to adjust to the climate.

When did this happen, jeffstaple x Scottevest? Limited edition of 350 pieces, only the two largest sizes left.

I love the "do not disturb" printed on the hood - it gets the point perfectly.

Also, anybody handled Scottevest jackets? How's the patterning? I love the idea, but I'm suspicious of the patterning. Nothing about gussets or anatomic whatever, and I think their usual customer isn't too athletic.

>>8193315

There's three ways you could take this that I think make sense. I think hardshells are largely unnecessary, overkill for urban use and steam up with aerobic activity. I think you saw my anti-hardshell rant earlier in the last thread. Except for the occasional pure-fashion use, I only throw one on in a straight-up downpour or if I feel like shit and I'm just like "fuck the world, fuck the weather, fuck everything" and I want that impenetrable feel I talked about.

First, you could buy two softshells: one for Lüneburg in the winter and one for Munich in the summer. Lüneburg seems to have a fairly mild winter, and if most of your time outside is on a bike, you could probably do pretty well with a softshell with a fleece backer.

For all of these I'd just look around at different outdoor companies and see what you like (I'll answer any questions, time permitting) but a great example of this type is the Arc'Teryx Gamma MX hoody.

http://arcteryx.com/product.aspx?gender=mens&model=Gamma-MX-Hoody

If you run cold or just want more insulation, the winter they probably have something similar up in their Fortius 3.0, which is the same stuff with a heavier fleece back than the Fortius 2.0 that is.

Then, a very light one for summer, something to just deal with the rain, basically a windbreaker/windshirt with a good DWR. You could also throw it over the winter one if you ever need a little more wind and water resistance.

My own pick for this is the Black Diamond Alpine Start, very light and thin but with the best DWR in the game, Schoeller Nanosphere.

>> No.8197130

Second, you could go with just a light, non-insulating windshirt type softshell and layer under it, either a fleece or a winter coat, both of which you probably already have. Most winter coats are fairly wind and weather resistant already; personally I seldom wear a seperate shell in winter.

I strongly suggest, if you just have or are just going to have one winter coat, to make it synthetic. In the event you're a little under-protected for the weather, or if something fails, it'll still keep you warm unlike down. They're also generally better at thermoregulation during activity. Down's main advantages are weight and packability, neither of which is a big deal in an urban setting. They're also more durable - if I have a single synthetic, I'll beat it up in a couple winters, everything from a pack beating against it to leaning up against things. Down doesn't have that problem, and it's a better choice for dry conditions and light activity.

Third, you could do something similar and get a straightforward softshell, one without any fleece backing, that'd keep the weather out of your insulation in winter and work through most of the summer, although it'll run hot sometimes. Schoeller Dryskin is perfect for this, but probably costs more than you're looking for. Here's one from Arc'Teryx (and you can probably find even cheaper, this is just easy for me to find right now) that's similar.

http://arcteryx.com/product.aspx?language=EN&gender=mens&category=Shell_Jackets&subcat=Softshell&model=Gamma-LT-Hoody

Oh, and I missed it - you can see on Arc'Teryx's site the Gamma AR right now, which is Fortius 3. I'd skip it, though, looking at it - the pocketing is lame, just two alpine-style hand pockets.

>softshell

Like I was getting at, "softshell" is such a broad category. Everything from the wispiest nylon to things that are basically 95% of a hardshell with 300 weight fleece backing. Recommended softshell *for what*?

>hardshell

Hardshell materials are a lot more similar and you're looking for the same thing out of them most of the time, but still, for what application? If you read reviews targeted at hardcore alpinists, you'll see them comically wigging the fuck out at companies for having low hand pockets that get covered by a harness, even though that's optimum for just sticking your hands in walking around town. Same thing with any kind of not-totally-necessary feature that adds a single ounce, which is why they'll praise things with no hand pockets whatsoever. If you want to ski in it, you'll want a powder skirt. Etc.

And that's leaving out aesthetic preferences - the basic look of hardshells varies more than softshells.

A few things that may be helpful as you look around: at the budget end, Marmot's fabrics are generally the most breathable. LL Bean makes pretty good ones for town use, and they'll usually have the cheapest take on any given Gore fabric - I don't own it, but they had a really nice looking Gore Pro thing called the Ascent that just got discontinued. And hardshells go for a steep discount on eBay - you even can find the entry-level stuff like Marmot's Precip or Patagonia's Torrentshell for less than $50 if you look.

As far as running goes, Flyknits are awesome aesthetically and functionally, but I highly recommend starting to transition to barefoot-style running from a functional perspective. Fashion-wise, I can't even fuck with Nike's pseudo-barefoot stuff anymore, which makes me sad.

Dickies probably makes the closest thing to the Commuter Cargo, which is crazy. Maharishi, past seasons of Isaora, and, believe it or not, Ralph Lauren might also interest you. Anything is water resistant after you spray it down with a DWR spray, like ReviveX or Nixwax.

check out ministry of supply. I had a pair of futureworks from outlier but i definitely like the fabric for the new way shorts rather than for pants so i returned the futureworks. I got a pair of chinos from MoS and they are exactly what i was looking for, plus 4 way stretch rather than 2 way. They make good dress shirts as well, prices are a little cheaper than outlier.

the climbers i have from outlier still blow everything else out of the water though...

again, thank you very much for your response, so detail, and so much info, really appreciate that.
the gamma mx looks very nice and functional, but seems like i cannot find anywhere in the place where i live, want to try out first before i buy anything that expensive. or is there any similar softshell that i can get but with lower price? also would the gamma mx provide enough warmth when i am just walking around the city and not riding a bike in Lüneburg winter? or do i need an AR?

i checked out the patagonia website and saw this http://www.patagonia.com/us/product/mens-mixed-guide-hoody?p=84080-0
i know it's hard and soft shell mixed without any fleece backing, but can i have you opinion on this, do you think it's enough for winter? i saw another softshell named knifeblade, but the colorway is not what i am looking for, as i prefer black/ grey. thx

>or is there any similar softshell that i can get but with lower price?

There is. I can't track anything down just now, but the essential traits of the Gamma MX are: a weather resistant stretch woven outer*, no membrane, a fleece inner, and kickass patterning and pocketing.

>also would the gamma mx provide enough warmth when i am just walking around the city and not riding a bike in Lüneburg winter?

Depends. Lüneburg's winter seem pretty mild, but everyone's metabolism, walking pace, and comfort level varies.

Staying warm works like this: your body is always giving off heat, warming the air around it. More activity means more heat. All insulation works by trapping that warm air against your body.

That can be foiled basically two ways. The first is wind - if the warm air is blown away from your body and replaced with new, chilly air your body has to warm up, you'll get cold. The second is your own sweat - if your activity level is high enough you're making enough heat that your body wants to sweat a lot, or if sweat builds up, and then you start making less heat, the sweat will start evaporating and cool you off.

You can actually stay warm with just a hardshell (or a 100% windproof membrane softshell) and a lame basic cotton t-shirt down much lower than you would think in heavy winds, as long as your activity level is continuous and moderate, enough to keep you warm, not enough where you oversweat, and continuous so the steamy feel inside your shell doesn't turn to clamminess when the heat flow from your body drops.

>> No.8222225

>>8222219

Things like the Gamma MX aren't 100% windproof, though, just wind-resistant - it'll block most of the wind most of the time, but it can be overcome, like if you were biking into a gust. (It's almost inconceivable that it'd let all the air out - think about just normal clothes you're in. Even they block some of the wind.) The flipside, and why it's better most of the time, is that, without a membrane blocking air flow, under most conditions it'll just let sweat and excess heat escape, keeping your inner climate more balanced. Not steamy and then cold and clammy.

So would it be enough? I can't say. Depends on you and the exact weather conditions where you are - even inside the same city, wind levels and ambient temperature can vary a lot.

The other thing to remember is that softshells are still *shells*. You're supposed to layer insulation under them, to your comfort. In one situation you might just have on a thin baselayer tee; in another you might add a thick sweater and an insulated coat, and in another you might just have the coat or the sweater. The advantage of something like the Gamma MX coming with a fleece on the inside is simplicity, that you'll need just one coat more often. A shell without a fleece inner? Just wear a fleece under it. It'll actually be warmer, not only because fleece jackets are usually heavier than fleece liners, but multiple layers of the same weight will be warmer than a single layer, because they trap an extra layer of warm air between them.

And if you need to add more wind resistance? Throw on a light windbreaker shell over whatever.

>> No.8222230

>>8222219

The Mixed Guide hoody should be a good piece, but I can't really speak to where it'd be appropriate - I've never owned a hardshell/softshell mix piece. The thing that's always gotten me about them is the high-exposure area to rain (the shoulder area) is also where you sweat the most. Also, when it's talking about the brushed inside, and looking at the pictures - I think it is partially fleece lined, but it's hard to tell from the web JPEGs. I'd ask Patagonia what the inner fabric is like.

Also, if you want pure black for cheaper and buying from the US site works for you: http://www.patagonia.com/us/product/mens-mixed-guide-hoody?p=84080-1

No clue why it's not listed. Also, check this, and note their reviews are targeted for alpinist use.

http://www.outdoorgearlab.com/Softshell-Jacket-Reviews/Patagonia-Mixed-Guide-Hoody-Mens

Out of the selection currently shown on the Patagonia USA site, I'd get the Simple Guide. More flexible.

>>8211458

Also gonna vouch for these. The Black Diamond BDV pieces seem online like they're just well-executed normal outdoor pieces, but the fabric is insane. Handfeel is on another level, and they've got NanoSphere DWR.

>>8218877

The thing (I've heard) about these reflective jackets is that the reflectivity wears away *fast*. If you're considering getting one, I'd treat it like you do those UEG Tyvek things, a brief statement piece.

come to russia
>guy goes to a mall to buy some jeans
>tries on some, apparently they are too tight
>those customer helpers (these students-slaves, whatever they are called) are giggling at him
>he asks what's so funny
>one of the assistants starts verbally abusing him, implying he's homosexual
>guy pushes him back
>assistant hits him in the face, proceeds to beat with a plastic chair (kinda the ones used on the beach, not the long-ass ones)
>broke ribs
>head severely injured
>some shit happened to his spine, like a part of it moved or something
>guy is really damaged, probably will be left retard/disabled for life
>cameras catch everything
>assistant is fined 10k rubles, which is approximately 288,53 USD

still think german customer service is bad? :^)

You're in the UK, right? Look at Buffalo, local legends, and a quick check shows their windshell-only pullover (standard is windshell+some level of pile) going for £58.

Really bad quality, or just a basic nylon windbreaker with all the practical-but-meh that goes with that?

Carhartt WIP seems to only have a cotton pullover anorak that's out of his pricerange.

>> No.8232596

why does everyone hate the MKI windsmock? it gets shit on a lot here. i know it's a nylon windbreaker but what's the issue with that?

Plus, it really doesn't rain all that much here anyway. At least, it doesn't rain more than San Francisco or Portland or anywhere else I've ever lived.
