Fixed gears are fun bikes as well as being pretty trendy, so I'll address both the cultural context that makes them popular and the experience of riding one.

There were popularized by bike messengers, a few of whom started riding fixed gear bikes because they require almost no maintenance - you can ride through the New York winter without cleaning road grit out of your derailleur - and because they provide increased control in the sort of gridlock conditions they often ride in.

Now, bike messengers are cool: they're a very visible counterculture presence in urban downtowns, flying in the face of the "suits" that work there. They represent freedom, working outside all day and darting past everybody stuck in cars. They're "hardcore" -- they work through the winter, they're extremely fit, and, to the untrained eye, they ride like kamikazes. They put on dangerous illegal races through the city and they wear punkish clothes.

Messenger culture became increasingly visible through the fashion world adopting their look (c.f. messenger bags) and films like Mash SF and Macaframa, leading to lots of people wanting to emulate the lifestyle - fixed gear riding is becoming the subcultural equivalent of skateboarding in the 80s, an excuse to hang out outside with friends, a sport embedded in the urban environment.

Messengers aside, the bikes themselves are cool. The most prized fixed gears are vintage track bikes, built by small shops for Italian or Japanese velodrome racers. These are unique and "authentic", both of which are highly valued attributes in hipster culture, and are seen as an antidote to the high-tech, mass-manufactured world of modern road biking.

The absence of brakes makes them more dangerous, which is "badass" via "not giving a damn" (though it's less dangerous than it sounds). And the absence of any additional components is appealing to minimalists and gives them a very streamlined look that many people find beautiful.

Ultimately, though, explaining the appeal of fixed gear bikes as fashion accessories does them a disservice -- people have been riding them for decades because THEY'RE FUN TO RIDE, despite the impracticality.

The reason is not easy to explain -- it comes down to the subjective experience of it after a few days of practice. People like driving manual cars for a roughly similar reason. Because of the lack of coasting, your legs always move in perfect conjunction with the bike: instead of feeling like you're on a vehicle, you feel connected to the ground, like you're on some sort of high-tech stilts. Slowing down your legs slows you down, speeding them up speeds you up; this removal of a layer of abstraction and mechanical complexity results in an experience that feels seductively pure.

also by virtue of needing to somewhat mantain a tempo, the virtues of lacking gears and brakes are almost marginal. I'll keep my extra 2kg, tyvm. grease your chain and bearings once a week and you're done.

I need some pants to ride in for a /fa/ggot with a 32 waist and somewhat chubby legs.

I tried on Levi commuters and they looked awful.

Any advice?

my dream bike would probably be a rivendell sam hillborne or something similar.

i guess touring bikes are like the dorky american heritage of cycling. i like the utility and comfort of my surly long haul trucker : 3

go to /n/.
try bikes direct, get something at least $400.
try motobecane
don't get a fixie, because fuck those things

sigh.
yes, in the short run anyway.
you'll destroy your knees trying to ride up hill.
just get a roadbike. fixies are just fashion items unless you actually ride in velodromes

>> No.8015245

>>8015228
I wouldn't buy a fixie unless it was a good $150 or so cheaper. I just thought they may be significantly cheaper because you mentioned them

how do they stop if the bikes don't have brakes?

>> No.8015332

>>8015248
CantStopDontWantTo xD lel!

if you pedal backwards you can block and make the rear wheel skid which both severely shortens the useful life of the tire and makes its surface irregular. this makes it flat prone and wobbly to ride on. there's absolutely no reason to go brakeless outside the track
