To Button Or Not To Button

Hey guys, I'm planning on going to a club and my friend has advised me to try to dress well. So I've thrown on a pair of nice jeans, a white t, and a button down shirt. It's like this but without the lines.

I'm planning on not buttoning the shirt, but my question is about the cuffs? Do they go buttoned or unbuttoned?

If you're not going to button a button-up shirt, don't wear it. Wear a jacket or a shirt jacket or a knit instead.

Then why not just wear the shirt without the tee or the tee without the shirt? I don't really understand what the combination of the two gets you if you're not REALLY wearing them together anyway.

Thanks for the help, I usually wear a leather jacket, so I don't have to really worry about what I wear most of the time.
