I got lucky, a family friend has a brother working there, they were hiring, he let me know, I applied.
They hired me because I knew the guy and I managed to stay because I play a lot of games and more importantly enjoy thinking about them from design standpoint - and on top of that I am not absolutely dumb and have some basic analytical abilities. Before, I thought everyone could do the job and I still kind of think so since it hasn't been that hard in my opinion - but seeing a lot of people around me, I need to start giving myself more credit for being able to function efficiently there.
Anyway, got lucky.
Pay is about 1.3x the average in my country, definitely not anything special - but I honestly don't care. Great job, great people.

Oh, the qualifications, forgot about that part, sorry.
All they asked for was being able to speak English at a good level (not from an English speaking country) and experience with videogames (preferably of the genre they usually produce). At the time they were hiring a lot of new testers, so.. yeah, this was all they asked for.
You had to find some bugs at a special version of one of their games at the interview, a surprising amount of people had problems with that, not to mention that 3/4ths of those who found stuff weren't able to convey it efficiently and correctly.

It IS a good job. Some people see testing as a mean to move further up the pipeline, to being a designer, programmer or whatever, but myself, I am happy.
Testing really is a field with its own specifics, you could be a great developer, yet godawful tester and vice versa (and I know people like that). So far it has been immensely satisfying and in some ways much more rewarding than if I have been directly developing the game.
To answer your question tho, yes, it is a good way of starting a career in vidya business and if you're good, it will open a lot of doors to financially better or more expert positions.

watch a lot of skate videos. Valo's are amazing, durable and very comfy once broken in. I skated Xsjados, but they're a little "obscure" (ugh) and weird looking, definitely not a beginners skate.

Just watch a bunch of skate videos and take it slow. It's easy to learn but it takes a lot of getting used to. Be prepared to fall and look silly while you're falling. Avoid the "t-rex" stance where you hand your elbows infront of you for better balance. It seems like it's easier, but it's just doing you a deficit in the long run.

For skates I'd recommend Valo, USD, Razor or Remz. Remz are huge and bulky, but super fun.

My favorite skaters are Jeff Stockwell and Jon Julio. AggressiveMall is a good website to buy from/lurk their forums.

Tough question.

Camera + lens under $1000 is hard, unless you're buying used. iirc you can purchase Canon T3i's with lenses for around $800 I think.

Buying a used camera body is ok, biggest thing is a)how long homie used it for (the sensor on most entry-level DSLRs can take about 200,000 pictures before the sensor burns out) and b)obviously should be in ok shape.

used lenses is a gamble, because you never know how clean the lens really is, if the glass is clean, etc etc.

also hugely depends on what kind of photography you wanna take. lugging around a DSLR just to take selfies and pictures of your homies is kind of stupid, you can easily get a PowerShot or something similar that has like 18 MP.

if you can't tell i'm partial to Canon, but some people enjoy Nikon more. Sony Alpha's are also bretty good for the price point. Do research, I'd start with Canon Rebel lines, those are the most entry level, plus come with a standard 50mm lens and body together.

if you're going to shoot with a DSLR and not a point and shoot, learn to shoot in RAW format or else you're basically cutting your camera's balls off. Shooting JPG only is doing the camera a disservice.

I'm a philosophy major at Rutgers, which has a surprisingly excellent philosophy department (ranked best in the world most years). It's mostly at a graduate level but it trickles down to undergraduate so have about six levels of formal logic, a lot of philosophy of science courses, etc. I'll exchanging at University of Seattle for a year starting next semester though. I've always loved philosophy / just plainly analyzing things with an agreeable set of premises. My interests right now are mostly psychoanalytic (see Zizek youtube videos and a blog called thelastpsychiatrist, for example) and ethical in a pragmatic sort of way. I remember being 12 or 14 and being caught in the thought that because (a) death cannot be experienced and (b) time is relative to perceived temporal events, we can (c)onclude that a person's consciousness is eternal insofar as time as a perceived thing is only existent in his consciousness. Obviously this is the opposite of rigorous, but it's something that inspired and interested me at a young age and I continued from there, studying the basics of most religions and then just kind of picking philosophy where I can. It can be a little discouraging at times because a lot of the people I know interested in philosophy just love and love picking up terms and names and dates, and will have a conversation with you and just drop them all on you without actually going into the deep crevices of the ideas. I'm the opposite way. If you ask me about Nietzsche's metaphysics, I probably won't be able to tell you anything, but if you present me with his text I'll be able to fully explain every part of it. So really I'm set on studying philosophy because I'm too interested in it not to. If you think you would regret not having continued studying philosophy if you were to quit, then I would suggest you continue studying it.

Thanks, anon. I appreciate the response.

I guess what I'm struggling with is whether or not pursuing philosophy in a university setting will have any considerable advantage over independent study, seeing as there's a lot of free resources out there for those interested in philosophy. I know the obvious advantage is the one-on-one experience of engaging with professors and students, but even that can be somewhat approximated with all of the professors/students who have taken to the internet to basically teach for free.

Perhaps the biggest problem is that I'm not sure just how passionate I am about philosophy. I've always been vaguely interested in philosophy, but it wasn't until maybe last year that I got really deep into it. I think I've always just been a very intuitive person - studying philosophy now, I am constantly coming across concepts and concerns that have crossed my mind before, despite not having any rigorous understanding of philosophy to fully express those ideas at the time. The idea of possibly teaching philosophy to students excites me, but it also seems like a huge risk for someone who is just beginning to explore the depths of their affinity to the subject.
