The reason I eventually got into /fa/ was because I managed to find a subtle art-form that puts my desire for self expression on the outside. Instead of bottling up my emotions, I display them openly. I display my desires in a manner which requires discipline.
I do the same thing with my art. Every face and odd character carries a piece of me in it, be it exaggerated or not.
But fashion, and the experimentation that comes with it, is just fun. The adjustment of the silhouette, colors, shapes, textures, all to create this being of human individuality. While individualism can be over-administered, especially in countries like the US (which demand and spawn freaks, geeks, outsiders, and faux extroverts).

In the end, it provides a form of meditation, and it's also fun.

In addition, who cares how others dress? People with a desire to validate their own incompleteness and ineffectiveness.
