I can only imagine them working out with a white strap and long black socks (wiki says its used with a sock type called tabi, I think and those look interesting) with in a sort of monochrome fit (not gothninja), trying to evoke a sort of warrior/trained aesthetic. But that'd require you to be quite adept at wearing them and wouldn't really work out in public.
I think a greek sandal aesthetic would be much easier to wear well, and probably much more comfortable. Something like pic related, except male (I'm thinking of like a wrap that extends ~2 inches above the ankle) and much more simple
