It seems like a lot of people in this thread do not really care for watches because it is 'redundant' since we have cell phones and other devices.
I would argue thst it actually is more convenient to look at your wrist than to pull out a phone, but even more so I really appreciate well made watches. I get it, not everyone would drop big bucks on an 'accessory' or whatever, but there are a ton of people, myself included, who enjoy craftsmanship and such. Im a poor college student so im stuck with tomex and casio but one day i really want a sweet IWC...

Sometimes when im at work I dont even want to have my phone on but at the same time need to have a fairly accurate time.

When im with older people as I often am in my line of work, you look like a kid when you check your phone, you look like a man when you check your watch, and thats not some "le reddit gentleman" thing its just the truth.

I can agree that in a hell of a lot of jobs thats not a problem, but in mine and im fairly certain quite a few others, having a watch makes you look a hell of a lot more respectable and makes the checking of time a lot more subtle than getting your 5 inch Nexus out your pocket.

Even so I think your example sucks, if I was in a meeting and someone bought their phone out it would indicate to me more that they were wholly uninterested in the proceedings. The fact that its more than just a time checker to me makes it worse, as you could have been reading a text or an email that you shouldnt be focussing on while in a meeting, even in that brief moment.

Outside of my work, im absolutely tech crazy, and dont wear a watch because I agree with you, theyre obsolete as a functional tool. But if you were doing my job, youd get dirty looks for checking your iPhone whereas you wouldnt get judged for checking your watch.

On topic: sure use. A smartphone instead of a watch. A watch is more of a statement however. It's one of the only (if not the only) acceptable form of male jewelery. A nice watch can set you apart from the crowd without being gaudy, or peacocking. And yes, they can be a piece of tradition, and heritage. How is that a bad thing? My father gave me a watch when I was 15 and I still wear it now and then to show some history. Plus checking the time on a watch takes like 1/4 the time of a smart phone, and you don't look like a clown fumbling in your pockets for your giant plastic screen.
