The advertising did a good job of linking it to an image of class and success. Now it's become a way of projecting a sort of detached, "I don't care about society", kind of cool.

That being said I'll never smoke because I care too much about my health. But I'm the first to admit it looks cool as fuck.

My uncle is the /fa/est motherfucker I know. He's a guy in his late forties who looks like Nick Wooster and Jimmy Wales' bastard offspring, with the voice of George Zimmer. When he walks into a room he doesn't look overdressed, he makes everyone else looks underdressed and generally exudes enough confidence and class to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

Then you shake his hand and your hand smells like a dirty ashtray, and the effect is ruined because it's the same smell you'd encounter at trashy motel room or an old folks bingo parlor.

Scent is the mind's most powerful trigger, and while 40 years ago it may have been cool, today most people associate it with hookers and trailer park mechanics.

even in the 40s and 50s etc (when everyone smoked) it was shown as rebellious as kids who were not legally allowed to purchase cigs were smoking (rebel without a cause).

today its also got that sense of rebelliousness, but also the 'i dont give a fuck that these things are bad for your health' rebelliousness is appealing

The reason smoking is fashionable or in a broader context "cool" is simply because that's how its portrayed in advertising and popular culture.
Cigarette companies fucking win when it comes to advertising, I mean why else would you want to smoke? All it does is ruin your body, and the only reason why it calms people down is because they're getting their nicotine fix.
Think about all the reasons you think smoking is cool
>Wow, it shows people don't care for their body, that's so edgy
>A lot of people do it
>It's romantic/mysterious
>It reminds you of warmth/home
