real screamo never caught on in the US like it did in Spain, Italy, France, Japan etc. The term got bastardized by MTV, Rolling Stone, Myspace Music and the rest of the mainstream media. Skramz wasn't a term that caught on until after the scene had all but died in the US and was used to differentiate between real screamo and the shit you plebs were told was screamo. Besides, real screamo is more similar power violence and hardcore than anything else.

Basically it's a revival of the UK sounded from back in the early 90's (specifically '92) when hardcore was transforming into jungle. Key signifiers are the amen break and pirate radio-style soundscapes. Both Pitchfork and RA had great pieces on it earlier this year that I'm too lazy to look up bc I'm on my mobile.

Key songs in the genre are:

Tessela - Hackney Parrot

Tessela - Hackney Parrot (Special Request Remix)

err what? two major music publications have written articles on its resurgence this year, and a semi-mainstream artist (four tet) has devoted an entire album to it. the sound has taken the underground music world by storm this year, so I'd definitely say its "made a comeback". now, I don't think we'll see Bieber, Avicii or Pitbull doing any jungle inspired tunes, but I don't really give a fuck about them

Kingdom's Bank Head with Kelela on it will get a tip. Rustie, either Shlasherr or Triadzz (Slasherr would be the obvious pick, Triadzz the hipster one). Todd Terje will get a song in the top 5 because he's Todd fucking Terje (I'm guessing Strandbar (disko)). Midland should get a song, maybe even 2, he's been on fire (Archive01 and maybe Trace?). In terms of what will get it, Immunity has a great shot.
I feel like it doesn't deserve it, though.

It is by far the most polished electronic album of the year, but I feel like it's too safe.
It doesn't have an edge and doesn't take any risks.
It lapses into that Sigur Ros-esque "ambient so boootiifulll" attitude at times that I feel like is pleasant, but that's all it is, pleasant.

On the other hand, you have records from the Haxan Cloak, Kerridge, or Daniel Avery (just a few examples) that aren't nearly as flashy (well maybe the Haxan Cloak LP is), but are trying to say something new.
Immunity is still a solid 4/5 for me, don't get me wrong.

>>7386543
Yeah, agree w/ all these choices. I think top 5 will be Tessela, Objekt, Terje, Forest Swords/Haxan Cloak/Fis (any Tri Angle artist), Jon Hopkins. Order? I don't fucking know.

wut? RA loves Holden. Everyone fucking loves Holden.

I don't think Agnes Demise has been "ubiquitous" enough for SOTY. I'd say Hackney Parrot is the favorite there as you literally couldn't go to a show this year without hearing either the original or the Special Request remix (speaking of which, I wonder if they'll put BOTH on their songs of the year list). Ten Walls Gotham was the "Ibiza song", which always places high but never wins it outright. Agoria - Scala will probably place high in that same vein. "It's You" will probably place middle because, while it was ultra-hyped, it was almost hyped to an annoying level. there's also the argument that it was actually a 2012 song. Tale of Us will probably get a nod for Another Earth, especially after they panned their Mano Le tough remix, but will probably be towards the back

>> No.7386744

>>7386737
Yeah, I typo'd.
I meant Hopkins is the crossover success.
Holden is RA's darling.

True true, SOTY needs to be something that defined the year, not just a really great track.

lmao they got so much flak for being on Daft Punk's nuts earlier this year I wonder how they'll treat ranking the album and Get Lucky. I bet the bastards stick with their praise. I could see Get Lucky getting the 8 spot or something lame like that.

There's 4 artists I can think of who have a spot reserved for them in the top 10, Blawan, Burial Joy O and Terje. Pretty sure Blawan didn't release anything this year. Burial won't release anything until Christmas (although they might count Truant / RS as he released it too late last year as well). I'm confident Strandbar will be top 5 and pretty (70%) sure BRTHDTT will be top 10 (unless they consider it a 2012 song)

Manipulator was pretty great too. Not up to Doppelganger's standards, but I still feel that it doesn't get the credit it deserves. I'm hoping the reunion shows might lead them to come back and play in Washington again.

Also, I once played a show in Seattle with Just Like Vinyl, the band that Thomas Erak was in after TFOT broke up. Nobody gives a shit, and this doesn't pertain to anything, but I rarely get a chance to bring it up because nobody listens to TFOT, let alone JLV. >tfw I listened to blackgaze for several years before it bloomed up through deafheaven this year
>tfw despite that I enjoyed the album
>tfw I'm now labelled as an entry /mu/tard due to that

Seriously though, I think most of the answers I quoted were made by white suburban teenagers themselves that couldn't get into the genre despite its popularity on several music platforms. And that while seeing bland EDM being posted everywhere ITT, it's not really /fa/ because every pleb can or will get into it. Music that purely serves to entertain and doesn't contain any artistic value wouldn't be considered as fashionable by me, this despite its usage in fashion shows (tricky rick strikes again).

Back to the topic, I'd nominate lesser known IDM, especially drone/noise records as most /fa/ (or most patrician at least), while I'd disregard most shallow UK garage/techno/hip hop records that were posted by the plebs itt

Up and coming (so that if you know about them you're hyper in tune to trends) and 3. Have tons of hype (so that you're immersed in the scene enough to know what the buzz is around)

I think the artists that best fulfill all 3 are the White Material guys (Young Male, DJ Richard and Galcher Lustwerk). Anyone who's anyone in the underground scene had been talking about them for the past 6-9 months, especially Galcher

mad plebs are mad. IDM and EDM are valuable terms in "shallow" discussions like these to point in a direction, this is not a music board. My music taste and my experiences in production probably make me a more reliable source in terms of music than you.
>>7397640
I didn't even involve the other two examples into my post, I just stood up for this specific release in my post that didn't deserve to receive this negative attention.
>>7397569
Of course it's entry-level blackgaze and of course it's comparatively popular, but it's nowhere near tumblr-core. To sum up my opinion though I think it's quite ironic for a board filled by angsty teenagers to renounce successful releases and listen to cookie-cutter dance music instead.

>>7400601
addendum: I'm quite aware of blackgaze blowing up in the past and have to admit that I'm a rather late successor of this following to, I think I got into it 2-3 years ago (which is not trve at all ofc). The thing is though that when you compare the amount of attention that sunbather has received with the amount of attention neiges' first wave of blackgaze has received, it seems pretty obvious that sunbather has received notably more attention through p4k and other reviewing sites.

Despite that, I think that the responses to my posts won't evolve further and remain in this "you're dumb and you know nothing" manner. With that said, I grew out of deep house and similiar music scenes surrounding it after actively composing/producing in these fields. I think it might just be because I'm currently in a creative "kitsch" phase though and shouldn't take art too seriously.

Pretty solid list, been getting into more minimal wave myself (Iron Curtain especially). Id add classic American folk and gospel to that. There's been a resurgence of interest around that type of music

I cant see why this thread is still on thie fucking board.

Has no one mentioned witch house?

I love Tycho and Mogwai, so the witch house stuff is nice when I wan't to hear some darker stuff. Most people I show it to approve, but you have to know when to play it and what to play.

Because apart from some fedoras talking about metal and screamo, this is a pretty decent collection of music. Better than most the shit you find on /mu/, which is filled with entry level garbage
