>Malls Across America
>Throughout the 1980s, as America’s downtown districts declined in importance and the “big-box” stores began their slow march across the country, malls became increasing central to American popular culture, dominating the social life of a large swath of the population. In 1989 Michael Galinsky, a twenty-year-old photographer, drove across the country recording this change: the spaces, textures and pace that defined this era.

>Starting in the winter of 1989 with the Smith Haven Mall in Garden City Long Island, Galinsky photographed malls from North Carolina to South Dakota, Washington State and beyond. The photos he took capture life in these malls as it began to shift from the shiny excess of the 1980s towards an era of slackers and grunge culture.
This shit is right up my alley. I'm definitely getting a copy of this.

No but it is self-reflective. Things look different in hindsight. Some things look worth keeping and others worth dropping.

And in our time, thanks to photography and internet we have access to far more hindsight than ever before.

Like, did an average joe living in 1713 have a firm grasp of what a people from 1665 wore?

My bet is unless he was able to peek at some art or books or knew how to read... not a fucking clue.

I think of retro fashion and revivalism as like a greatest hits album.

You comb through a decade with the 20/20 vision of hindsight, see the trends overall and from the outside instead of from within... and you pick out the 'best' bits. The parts that work beyond the context of that decade.

And just like a greatest hits album, the stuff that ends up on the playlist was not necessarily the most popular track at the time.

do you think the people in the photos at the beginning of this thread are dressed head to toe in dior?
the point is that people in general have their own personal style, and that's often influenced by what they see others doing: trends. in that way, i think that a more or less precise aesthetic can be felt from decades in which pop culture and mass media played a much more important role than they do since the internet hit the mainstream. the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s are all stylistically different, and the things associated with them often have to do with popular style: that's what we're looking at here and that's what people mean when they say that they see trends of past decades resurfacing (af1, stonewash, gaudy patterns, etc.).
who indeed cares what zara are doing when the point is what people in general are (and were) doing and the similarity between mainstream trends?
you're just looking at it from another angle but you aren't wrong either
