I don't know how you can get out of it.
I once ordered a watch and asked the seller to mark down the price to about 25 bucks (the watch was like 500).

Fedex held it and called me and emailed me wanting confirmation that the watch really was worth only 25 bucks. Nosey fucks.

All I did was photoshop the invoice the seller sent me and sent that to them.

Delivered that day. Fuck theml they were only so gung ho about it because they can a commission from collecting the tax or some shit.

dont use Fedex or UPS, use USPS or Canada Post or whatever service the government provides for mail. In many cases, the employees will be too lazy to put in due diligence on customs/duty charges (muh gubernment union job) or they ship in such crazy volumes they don't give a fuck about duty on small purchases

>> No.7344910

if customs was 50 the item must have cost much more. you should be able to pay it, but in the future the actual value and product declaration needs to be lower/a lie, which has to be done on the shippers end

>> No.7344936

Simply don't buy stuff that is shipped from outside of 'Murrica.

I once got something shipped from the UK. DHL wanted like $15 for customs after I got the item so I told them to fuck off and started buying only from the land of the free and never looked back.

>use USPS or Canada Post
This.
Always try to use the regular post service if you can. It's like 50/50 whether you get charged. With couriers it's 100% chance.

top lel, what i always did was after i was done with prepaid visas i'd use that as a card, they'd right down my visa and everything but it be my prepaid visa with no money, or i'd use my debit visa which also doesn't work.

i cheeped out on some much $$

Why did you order something from a foreign country without researching customs charges?

I think customs fees are bullshit, but I don't try to scam my way out of them.

Imma assume you're american tho.
Why are americans so tight about this? Are your post people so discerning that they know you're breaking the law? Must be some harsh penalties then.
UK sellers are very accommodating, which leads me to believe that either that the penalties if they were caught are minor, or that their post office customs folks really just don't give a fuck.

You in Canada?
With fedex you will always pay customs brokerage -- even if there are no duties. The brokerage fee isn't a duty -- it's a fee you pay fedex so that they can file customs paperwork on your behalf.

If you're shipping from the USA to Canada, and don't want to pay for brokerage, ship USPS -> Canada Post.

As a government institution they sidestep a lot of customs shit, and therefore do not charge brokerage (only actual duties where applicable).

If you want to go one step further and avoid duties entirely, try to buy MADE IN USA goods. They are subject to the North America Free Trade agreement and therefore exempt from duties.

>> No.7345150

>>7345130
As an addendum: Buying American won't save you from paying the brokerage fee if you ship Fedex or any courier. Even if the goods are American-made and exempt from duties, you still need to file customs declarations and shit, which means that a Courier will still need to charge you a brokerage fee.

Basically OP, there's nothing you can do for this package. Just makes sure next time that you ship via US postal service.

I usually ask politely before bidding.
US sellers never want to do it though, so like >>7345115
says there must be something more going on than the possibility that all americans are such goodytwoshoes.

The only others that adamantly will not finagle the customs forms are germans; but really, are you all that surprised?

>> No.7345224

>>7345159
You can't get out of it. If you want your shit you gotta pay the man. Where did you order from?

It's easier for Americans to buy from Mexico or Canada because of NAFTA. Generally there are no duties or tariffs if you do this.

The best way to avoid this shit is to know what has duties beforehand and what shipping services from what countries offer free brokerage.

>> No.7345240

>>7345086
Why don't you just write good boilerplate in all your listings saying that you won't declare items gifts?

Why don't you respond to emails with requests to turn them down instead of just shipping with no communication whatsoever?

If you don't communicate with your customers and just suprise them with shit you are bad ebay seller.

>> No.7345242

>Don't buy stuff shipped from outside of 'Murrica

It doesn't matter where things are made just where they are shipped from.

For example, when buying some nice, italian-made
Ricks you can simply order from somewhere like Mr.Porter that is based in America rather than say, Tres Bien which is in the EU.

It's all about making sure your shit never crosses an international line.

>> No.7345363

>>7345328
NAFTA is based on origin of goods. Even if it weren't... stuff that comes from italy would have had duties when it came into the US. And those duties would be reflected in the price when you ship the shit to Canada.

Better for a Canadian to buy American-made goods and avoid duties entirely.

And vice versa.

NAFTA is set up so that you get consistently better value buying from the USA, Mexico, or Canada.
