So what is a haircut that will be ahead of its time? OP's pic is basically what I've got and do the greasy comb look, but ever since professor mackattack trademarking it seems as tho everyone has jumped on this wagon and is no longer edgy or surprising if it even ever was. Its such a good cut though. Day after I got this cut I heard "whats up macklemore?" at least 5 times that day. Feels so bad.

Your hair has gotten too long on the sides and back. Get it down to a 1 or a 1 on the bottom faded up with a 2.

Also get that ugly side cleaned up so it drops off like in the photo.

Then do whatever you can to make it more voluminous. I think that guy in your first photo just used hairspray and combed it up.

I've gone with a 1 on back and sides faded into 2"ish on top for like, a god damn decade.

I use american crew forming cream, but it works very badly and my hair gets messed up in the middle of the day, what other products are better for this?

yeah, barbers don't ever seem to know shit. When I'd go to a barber and ask for a 8 on the top and a 2 on the sides, he'd literally just grab those clippers, run them over my head once, and call it a day. At salons they actually make sure it doesn't look like a lumpy pile of fuck and use scissors and comb it out and all that. Go to a salon.

Should I go to a retail chain like Greatclips or stick with my current situation?

I go to an independent barber shop, but unfortunately I live in Bumblefuck, Alabama, and customers here are 40+ year old men getting a buzz. The girl that cuts my hair is no master. I tell her to thin my extremely thick hair and she utterly fails each and every time. All she can do is shorten it. It pisses me off since I like my hair medium-ish, some may say a mullet but I don't. I've had to wear if one way and now I want to get /fa/ but I can't unless I get layers cut or something, which I believe this chick is incapable of, however I don't have much faith in a mainstream chain barber shop.
