I wear derbys and brogues.

I'd say it depends what you do - what course, what year you're in etc. I'm a PhD Student, so important people are often dropping into the lab unannounced - I might look overdressed to the ugg/sweatpants/uni hoody crew, but at least I look half way professional and like I make an effort. First two years of my undergrad I dressed in street clothing, third year I started preppy to prepare my wardrobe for job hunting.

I'd say a decent pair of boots would be good, especially as it's nearing winter. If you dress fairly smart anyway, brogues or derby's are a nice medium between smart and casual. Rounded toes make you look less formal too, at least that's what I've found.

alot of college kids just wear those generic ass walmart/payless/target sneakers or converse
or the knock off addidas/sketchers free runs/minmal running shoes

so a step up would just be whatever minamalist nike shoe is hyped righ now

flyknits, free run 2.0 or w/e the roshe things are
