I just carry around a case when necessary. It's pretty rude to wear them in situations where people will be looking to you for any conversation. It is easy to pull them out when I know I'll be busy or in a situation where I actually don't want to be bothered.

Unless you're going for a youthful (childish) or douchey look, I'd just keep them around for when it feels appropriate to wear them.
