If you don't have a dedicated group of friends who are willing to play with you and teach you shit you should probably stay away from it for your own good. Lower brackets are filled with pain and despair. And even if you reach very high you'll still get stomped 50% of the time (which feels awful and humiliating).
I've wasted about 2000 hours for Dota 2, no more no less. I regret about it now. Only about 1/3 of the matches were enjoyable. It just doesn't worth it.
