If you can afford them, buy them. But if you even have to think more than one second on whether or not you can afford to spend 400 bucks on a pair of plain white shoes, then don't: there's about two hundred million things out there that make more sense to spend 400 bucks on.

serious question: why do people still buy their shoes retail?
In all honesty, if there's one single clothing article that really is nice to get on ebay then it's footwear. There's always an abundancy of offers and even shoes that have been worn only once or twice go for about 10-20% of the original price.
I got my Prada calf leather boots for $50. If I had bought them in a store, they would've been more than $600. They have been worn once, and the delicate leather was 100% unscathed when I got them. I am currently not in need of footwear, but spending 400 dollars on a pair of shoes seems totally insane to me when I think about how I could get 80 pairs of fantastic shoes/boots on ebay for that kind of money, especially since there's really all kinds of shoes there. I'd just spend $100, buy myself two pairs of nice shoes and save the rest for something that I can't get on ebay, like a Sruli Recht blazer.

May I ask what kind of paint thinner it was? They just look worn out when they should not be. If you use them as beaters and get the distress somewhat evened out they might look decent. Anyways the quality is still there for sure and is just an asthetic fault.

Ok, you can redeem these shoes one of two ways:
Buy fiebing white leather dye and try that, the stuff works pretty well; I don't know what you used but it should not have done that. Ive used deglazer on shoes before and that's exactly how they turn out, that natural grayish color. Your last resort, if the dye still doesnt take for some reason, is to just buy some deglazer and make yourself a pair of gray CPs. At least get something out of your purchase other than a pair of ruined shoes.

>> No.6786378

>>6786360
you could wash them carefully. but don't use paint thinner lol

>> No.6786380

>>6786357
It was actually laquer thinner, but I just get that anyways cause its stronger and can replace paint thinner in most projects. Brand is Klean Strip. I use it when I need to remove a coat of finish on wood or steel, so basically works to burn through thick layers of paint with seal of clear coat. The thinner would make quick work of pigment on any surface to be honest.

>> No.6786393

>>6786380
Ive used that shit to sand the paint off cars, shits strong.

>> No.6786396

>>6786374
Also, if you used good leather dye, my only guess as to why the dye didn't take would be that there is/was still paint thinner on/in the leather that prevented the dye from affecting the leather.
Maybe try cleaning the leather to get all the paint thinner out? or using dye prep or something? I don't know, I'm not a cobbler, I've just touched up shoes with dye before.

>> No.6786413

>>6786380
from what I read from the MSDS, it's a mixture of acetone, hexane, acetic acid, MEK and a couple alcohols. No doubt a good thinner, but that it fucked up your shoe so effortlessly makes me wonder.

so much for quality, I guess.

>> No.6786428

>>6786374
Thats the dye I bought, and I can tell you it's not dye at all. It really is a paint. I tried it on on an old leather belt and you get the same crusty and shined finish when it dries. I can imagine it works fine with small patches.

>> No.6786443

>>6786374
If you recall my post it dried for 10 minutes before I noticed it spilled on my shoes, so more than enough time to decay the finish on the shoes. I mean I never let it set for 10 minutes on wood with thick coats of finish, and in most cases 4 minutes is enough otherwise I use something else.

>> No.6786464

>>6786428
Yeah, I've used the black stuff on shoes before, when they dye leather they basically paint it, it doesn't actually dye the leather a color. That's why your shoes were gray underneath they white dye they used in the factory, that's what the raw leather looks like. Use deglazer on any leather you own, you'll get the same effect. Like I said, if the leather dye really isn't taking for some reason, and you're out of options, just deglaze the entire shoe so you have gray CPs. At least have a wearable pair of shoes.

I have a pair of black lows for 3 years and you can tell the creases more than the white ones this guy posted. Also the scuffs are more noticeable. I wear them with khaki or black pants, but they really look bad with indigo jeans. I wear the white ones in more outfits, yet they managed to age better than the black ones. There are no major construction failures other than the inner lining on the heel area of the shoe which starts to break down and decade. That is there to reduce friction, and can be repaired for cheap. Other than that they hold up well if you can deal having scuffs on your shoes.

oh, I'm sorry for responding the way I did, then.

>>6787693
Yeah, a moc toe is where two pieces of leather are sewn together to form the vamp. This is often done with moccasin shoe styles because the vamp also wraps around the bottom of the foot.

I can't say with certainty that the CPs are not moc-toe, but it looks like an apron toe to me.

That stitching seems purely for aesthetics. >>6787531
This one seems to have some structural purpose.

thats nearly 100 USD with shipping and the quality wont be good, but I would still prefer CP if I can get them for around 200

Those CPs are moc toe, but don't have moccasin construction.

Unless the CPs are a moccasin stitch, which they don't seem to be (but maybe they are), neither serves any structural purpose. I was posting the Alden Indy as an example of an apron toe that was less tasteless IMO.

If it's serving any structural purpose on the CPs, the design of the shoe is downplaying that fact. It doesn't look like much of a moc toe, even compared to some of the more structured-looking moc toes like Red Wing's moc toe boots. (and in any case the main reason I put up with the shape on Red Wing's boots is because it's grounded in the brand's history).

>>6787780
Are they? Well, you could have fooled me. the transition from one piece of leather to the other looks so seamless that it looks like if the apron wasn't there it would just be a plain toe boot underneath. I don't like moc toes that try to look like apron toes any more than I like apron toes.

idk if this is relevant...but eh what the hey.

if you are thinking about buying cps because of it's minimal look, i would highly recomend checking out acne adrians. they are a bit more minimal looking than cps imo.

just a recommendation to anyone who is considering.

im not trying to talk you out of cps
both are cool

I do have art classes, and I already work with wood and steel paint in my job. I get some nice deep brown finishes and white/off white shades in oily paint.

I like these in black more than the CP cause of the sole. The tongue seems dingy though.

actually that's bullshit. you can find them new for about $50. If you are willing to do some bidding they go for about $20-30 (ebay). At least here in Germany.

Also, I don't know about this particular product because I don't have it, but my pair of converse (suede black high-top all stars) was the only pair of shoes that didn't break on me. Seriously, they look like I bought them a couple months ago and I've had them since my 15th birthday (21 now). Every other shoe I had gradually dissolved in about 1-3 years. (I do a LOT of walking)

I'd like to know whether I can expect this kind of quality from those Converse, too, because if I can, I'll probably gonna cop them.
