What the fuck does 'hipster' even mean anymore? Is this only a problem in the States, or is this a worldwide stereotype?

>> No.6758513

“Hipster” is a term co-opted for use as a meaningless pejorative in order to vaguely call someone else’s authenticity into question and, by extension, claim authenticity for yourself.

It serves no conversational function and imparts no information, save for indicating the opinions and preferences of the speaker.

Meanwhile, a market myth has sprung up around the term, as well as a cultural bogeyman consisting of elusive white 20-somethings who wear certain clothes (but no one will agree on what), listen to certain music (no one can agree on this either), and act a certain way (you’ve probably sensed the pattern on your own).

You can’t define what “that kind of behavior or fashion or lifestyle” actually is, nor will you ever be able to. That’s because you don’t use “hipster” to describe an actual group of people, but to describe a fictional stereotype that is an outlet for literally anything that annoys you.

The twist, of course, is that if it weren’t for your own insecurities, nothing that a “hipster” could do or wear would ever affect you emotionally. But you are insecure about your own authenticity - “Do I wear what I wear because I want to? Do I listen to my music because I truly like it? I’m certainly not like those filthy hipsters!” - so you project those feelings.

Suffice it to say, no one self-identifies as a hipster; the term is always applied to an Other, to separate the authentic Us from the inauthentic, “ironic” Them

Being called a "hipster" is the easy way to poke at someone that doesn't conform to low-class norms of the top 40s chart, loose-fitting athletic, "chav", or mall-tier shit (MY BALLZ/DICK WILL BE CRUSHED DOE), and, again, have interests outside of your circle's norms.

Being "hipster" in this day and age literally just means having deviated in fashion, taste, etc from the norm of the people in your environment.

It might not be as eloquent as your post, but it seems about right imo.

I will be forever linking to this, because /fa/ will never crawl out of its ass, stop pasting half-baked copypasta, and actually read some serious cultural criticism.

---

A key myth repeated about the hipster, by both the innocent and the underhanded, is that it has no definition. In August, after noting that the New York Times had printed hipster as a noun or an adjective more than 250 times in the previous year, Philip Corbett, the paper’s grammarian, wrote an open letter to the newsroom warning against its use. He certainly could have objected that it made for lazy headline copy, or that a derogatory term was being misused as praise. Instead, he objected that it wasn’t clear enough what the word means.

We do know what hipster means—or at least we should. The term has always possessed adequately lucid definitions; they just happen to be multiple. If we refuse to enunciate them, it may be because everyone affiliated with the term has a stake in keeping it murky. Hipster accusation has been, for a decade, the outflanking maneuver par excellence for competitors within a common field of cool. “Two Hipsters Angrily Call Each Other ‘Hipster,’” a headline in The Onion put it most succinctly.

The longer we go without an attempt to explain the term simply and clearly, the longer we are at the mercy of its underlying magic. In the interest of disenchantment, let me trace a history and offer some definitions. If we see the hipsters plain, maybe we’ll also see where they might come undone.

The Lower East Side and Williamsburg in New York, Capitol Hill in Seattle, Silver Lake in L.A., the Inner Mission in San Francisco: This is where the contemporary hipster first flourished. Over the years, there developed such a thing as a hipster style and range of art and finally, by extension, something like a characteristic attitude and Weltanschauung. Fundamentally, however, the hipster continues to be defined by the same tension faced by those early colonizers of Wicker Park. The hipster is that person, overlapping with the intentional dropout or the unintentionally declassed individual—the neo-bohemian, the vegan or bicyclist or skatepunk, the would-be blue-collar or postracial twentysomething, the starving artist or graduate student—who in fact aligns himself both with rebel subculture and with the dominant class, and thus opens up a poisonous conduit between the two.

Where I'm from, hipster was a term used to describe a movement of retro-centric individuals with interests laying in the obscure or underground. It has since come to vaguely describe an air of pretentiousness, condescension stemming from subjective values like musical taste or even food taste, and inauthentic interest in obscurity for the sake of vapid superiority.

Typically this meant a group of people who liked retro trends like fixies, moustaches, high wasted pants/shorts, and vested interest in grassroots movements, eating behaviours like veganism and underground music.

That would describe it as best as I can. Lot's of individuals like that here in victoria

I dunno. If we are talking about button up shirts rather than tee's, I think a lot of my shirts looks better tucked in to my trousers than untucked. >You can’t define what “that kind of behavior or fashion or lifestyle” actually is
Actually, it's rather easy to do so: Hipsters are philistines who elevated their pleb-tier, mindless consumer tastes to trend.

This was possible because leftism is so rampant in today's zeitgeist that they are able to feel rebellious be philistines at the same time.

They're basically the end product of decades of various subcultures rebelling against norms that grew weaker every year: The hipster is a substrate, a distillation of all these subcultures, trying to be rebellious - and, being a rebel in a rebellious world, this is all for naught.

Also, hipster is dead right now. The new thing is swaggot, which means being philistine, knowing it, and not giving a fuck. Where the hipster was philistine without knowing it (Or at least being in denial about it, calling it "ironic"), the swaggot knows it, accepts it and celebrates it.

Hipsters are people that want to promote their individuality and "difference" by their clothings and tastes but always ironically end up on every bandwagon.

Basically special snowflakes that like looking the same.

But, the term has been thrown around for some time and don't have a much of a definition now. It has become just another derogatory term.

Concerning fashion, for me an hipster is usually someone that tries to show interest in fashion but don't really make an effort about it. They end up looking a bit messy with trends from a few years back, cheap clothes and the tendancy to not understand that less is more.
