That's the point, they can't advertise properly and would have the spend a lot more to reach their audience, like maybe ads on high fashion streets and the like

They can't just run ads on TV because it would be too expensive for the 2 people that might be inclined to buy their stuff.

So giving away clothes to those stupid self-promotional types is a really cost-effective way to get some internet mouth to mouth infamy

And it's not like Alexander Wang has to spend as much money as they are actually sold for to give them away.

Also, it's just his diffusion brand so his mainline exclusivity doesn't suffer.

It's all around a nice way to get some buzz
