its funny how low quality has changed and shaped peoples definitions of what clothing should cost

its illogical that the lowest prices = greatest value but yet people follow that

Realize a large block of /fa/'s userbase are insecure fuccbois, who think that if they just hew to the most strict and rejectionist conception of style then people will think they look good and like them. And when that doesn't happen, psh, whatever, they can walk away massaging their ego by murmuring "pleb" to themselves.

So if it's in a mall, if the materials are pedestrian, if it costs about what a randomly sampled American will pay for that category of item (but not to much, gaiz, I'm a student, how do I Raf Simons Rick Owens) then not only will /fa/ not wear it, they'll reject the possibility of anyone else wearing it and looking good.

In an interview once, Nick Wooster said his go-to shoes were checkered vans, that he had worn them for decades, always replacing them when they had worn out, and that just recently, after thirty years of stunting in them, he had picked up a leather pair... in addition to the trusty canvas reliables.

Now watch someone call him a dadcore pleb and rag on him for where he's got a huge contract.

Whatever ones fit your style. Vans, Converse, Ked's, a pair you picked up from a thrift store that are Wal*Mart brand, anything.

Personally, I like Feiyue (the actual Chinese ones, not the IIRC French company licensing the name and basic design), just for the function - they're made as martial arts shoes, so the soles are thinner and more flexible, closer to barefoot, which I like. If it wasn't for that, I'd probably just go with black on black Converse.

Shirts are all over the place - thrift, shop clearance, eBay, find a cheap tailor. Buy quality. Don't buy anything new or not priced-like-used if it's not something you truly love. And focus your wardrobe: don't buy shit you don't really want to wear or have stuff to wear it with.

There's a whole thread about how people make money up now, like always.

I'm out after this, but:

>Why would anyone praise

I don't think I've ever praised Vans in my life, and I definitely haven't ITT. They actually leave me a little cold, personally; I've never really been one for pure canvas shoes, and Vans in particular seem like they hit on boring easily. And that's the first positive thesis I've advanced on them ITT. Normally I'd feel bad about how flimsy and unconsidered that is, but considering that every negative post of them ITT is either just straight snobbery or unqualified statements of "bad quality" I'm pretty okay with it.

Earlier this week, or maybe last, someone started a thread asking if Doc Martens can be /fa/. I said yes, of course - because any classic becomes a classic for a reason - but I think they're a little played out and I dislike them for a couple other reasons x and y, and posted a few other similar-vibe boots I thought might pique someone's imagination. I did not make any easy snipes like "lol, made in China," or "lol, McDonald's of combat boots," or "GTFO crusty."

That's the right sort of response to this stuff. The one response ITT that went in that direction was the guy who suggested OP go specifically for a model with a cupsole.

The wrong sort of response is to just dismiss decades of iconic status and history with grumblings about plebs and "muh kwalty" that miss nuance, context, sign value, personal style, different kinds of quality, literally everything that makes one person look like sex in Vans and another person look like a physically repulsive douche in a pair of Achilles or Geobaskets.

>bad quality

They're not as robustly made as some shoes, and in a culture entranced with disposability that can definitely be something to take into account.

>> No.6418118

>>6418110
At the same time, though, every culture uses some disposable stuff, and there's a unique kind of blithe charm to cheap, trashy, carefree clothes. (This is going to sound pretentious as shit, but writing that a sentence Nabokov used talking about the settings of Lolita stuck in my head: "Nothing is more exhilarating than philistine vulgarity.")

If you just mean the feel of the materials, it's canvas and rubber. It's hard to fuck up and quickly suffers from diminishing returns. I've never owned a pair or worn them for an extended period, but I can't remember anything objectionable when I've felt them. Let things be what they are. Disdaining Vans is as dull as someone in John Lobbs disdaining Rick sneakers.

This is separate from ethical issues of provenance, but those are neutralizeable by buying used, anyway.

>ugly designs

Talk. Be more precise. Be intelligent. What about them seems ugly to you? Why does it seem ugly? If you can't articulate some actual thoughts about the shoes you're probably just being snobbish about the people you perceive as their wearers. Which is just bad, which is my whole point.

>over more expensive

Seriously, man? You're calling other people plebs and you're the one talking about money? 'Kay.

>You're retarded.

Thanks.

Here, the "playground ableism" was more a dig that he's literally resorting to the favorite insult of first graders, but "retarded" should be socially unacceptable.

It's an insult still actively used to abuse people who are weaker than its users in at least one way because of a medical condition beyond their control. It hurts them and the people who care about them when it's used. Making people suffer for literally no reason is generally unacceptable, but since it's people we prefer to ignore and treat with less dignity when we can't, some people regard it as acceptable. It's not.

It's not so much about making the world a better place in some grand salvific way as it is not making the world a worse place for people who have a hard time in it already. Although I'd argue one leads to the other.
