Akira has an incredibly polished style. It's very tight futurism, with solid mechanical designs. I get the chills every time i watch it on account of the sheer human effort that bursts out of its seams. The soundtrack is pretty nice, too.

This movie certainly isn't for everyone and is basically the polar opposite of akira in every way
it's fucking slow, depressing, and weird
but after a couple of watches i thoroughly enjoyed it.

I have the same doubts. So much of blame exists in the spaces between the panels, I imagine it'd be hard to get right.
I've seen the existence of such an OVA hinted at, but I've never found anything substantial.
