I've heard a rumor on the internet that expending more calories than you consume causes you to lose weight

What i would do is reduce how many calories you consume, and if possible, increase the amount you use. As an idea, use exercise.

I have to disagree. Controlling the calories in is more important than the cardio. You can out-eat any amount of exercise. An hour on the treadmill can be wiped out by a single milkshake, burger, etc.
